When is a rise a spike?

Have been using the meter for a few days now, watching the rises and drops but not really sure how much of a rise is considered ok and how much pushes the figure into a spike and therefore not good for u?
 
Just roughly, maybe about 2-3 mmol/l above normal is normal, double figures should be avoided if you can, but its not that easy.........

The levels I work to are ....

Before meals : 4 - 7mmol/L
2hrs after : 7 - 9mmol/L

So for me, a spike was anything above 9mmol/L 2hrs after a meal.

I'd say that a 'spike' is whatever you decide it is now. It's about setting a rolling programme of targets that you can aim for (not hit every time) and work at improving those levels. If you aim for perfect levels from the off you might get a bit disheartened. As the weeks go by your levels should start to reduce generally and if you can eventually keep in single figures most of the time you'll be doing great.

Andy's guidelines are in line with what the DUK suggest (though I think their 2 hour might be 8.5 for type 2s?), and as NRB says you might decide that a rise of 2-3mmol/L after a meal is OK so that if you start at 6 you'll only go up to 9. However, if you continually find that a meal raises bg by 6+ points you might consider altering that choice, or doing without it as a regular choice.

One of the other difficulties is finding the peak level after a meal. It won't always be the same, and it won't be the same from person to person. I think I'm right in saying that for T2s their first phase insulin is most compromised, but after a while the Phase 2 kicks in and lowers levels. Consequently at 2 hours you might have begun to come down from your meal peak.

My suggestion would be to test at 1 and 2 hours for a while to see what the differrences are. Once you've found when you 'usually' peak, you can stick to that.

Don't worry if you get lots of 'rubbish' numbers for now. Concentrate on the differences between befores and afters and gradually aim to lower your starting points.

Personally, I regard anything over a 3 mmol/l rise after eating to be a spike.
