i have the same breakfast every day marmite, butter on 2 rounds of wholemeal toast, and a cup of coffee every morning. Sometimes it raises my bg by a couple of points and sometimes it goes up as much as 4 points. just wondered wot was the ideal rise after food
ps its my ideal breakfast not willing to change it

Hi @gail2 I think the answer is no more than 8.5 mmol/L two hours after a meal.although the US Diabetes Association say no more than 10 mmol/L. I think there are lots of factors involved in determining the actual rise as things like illness, exercise or movement can all impact on the increase.

The old UK guidelines for T2s used to be

4-7 before meals and
No higher than 8.5 by 2hrs after meals.

Many members here also use the rule of thumb of a meal ideally only raising BG by 2-3mmol/L at the 2hr mark from the pre-meal starting point. This can help in the early days, eg when levels are often higher, and can offer meaning to meal checks where before was say 10.2mmol/L, and 2hrs after was 11.7mmol/L

Both results ‘a bit too high’, but actually the meal rise was only 1.5, so if the overall levels can drift down gently so that the premeal is somewhere 4-7, then that meal choice would actually give pretty spot-on numbers.

Sounds like your breakfast is mostly working really well for you, and helping your BGs stay in range.

But would this may not be the case if somebody is taking insulin which Gail is.

Thanks @Leadinglights - yes apologies I answered more in a T1/oral meds mindset. Though to be fair, the guidelines for T1 (who are all on insulin) are:

5-7 before breakfast
4-5 before other meals, and
No more than 9.5 by 2hrs after meals

So perhaps the guidance for T2s on insulin aren’t that different?

There aren’t any target bgs for T2s. A T2 on once a day background insulin wouldn’t be routinely advised to test their BG 2hrs after meals. So long as the hba1c is okay and there aren’t many hypos then all good.

So if you’re happy with your a1c Gail then stick to your breakfast.
