Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I'm a newbie just diagnosed type 1 this afternoon. Fortunately no need to stay in hospital overnight but had my first insulin jab before I left. Going to diabetes centre at the hospital tomorrow to find out the craic....

Will someone let me know that everything will be alright? Have been questioning everything this afternoon to the point of not wanting to eat because I don't know what to eat...... Discipline seems to be the word of the afternoon! A new healthy smoke free future awaits I suppose.

Excellent forum so far. Thank you mr / mrs administrator

Welcome Matt. I won't be much use I'm afraid as I'm not quite a Type 1 but I'm sure there will be one along soon who can help you find your feet. I'm sure the appointment tomorrow will help clear up some of the mysteries too, but if you have questions, please ask and we'll do our best to support you.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis Matt. I'm 20-odd years ahead of you. There's a lot to take in over those first few days, but just keep asking questions, test lots, keep notes and get used to counting the carbs you are eating. You can do this! 🙂

Hi Matt! - welcome to the club no-one wanted to join!

42 years and 5 months since my diagnosis, aged 22 - still alive, still kicking, nothing's dropped off, nothing's stopped working, I worked in the same field I was employed in at diagnosis till I retired - what else can I tell you?

I never wanted to abseil or bungee jump but if I had wanted to, I would have done so. D has never stopped me doing anything.

Don't worry (as if telling you that will stop you!) - it is a lot to take on board, esp at first. Think I was brain dead for a week or two.

And get a book, called 'Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Teenagers and Young Adults' by Ragnar Hanas. It is full of the truth about T1 written in a helpful and easily understandable way whether you are 15 or 55 at diagnosis.
