Im sure this has been mentioned before but i couldnt find anything.

Its best to go to bed with a blood sugar around 8? (so ive read) So if mine is anyl ess than 7 i tend to have a bed time snack which is usually toast with jam but then my morning blood sugar is around 7/8 which i would like to be lower.

Whats the best thing you have found as something to eat and is there a certain number of carbs i should be eating?

I have been havin 3/4 crackers or bag of crisps when this happens. Its worked well so far and levels in morning have always been below 7. I have no idea what is correct number of carbs cos ive not been told, just tried different things til I found one that worked.

If my levels are 7 or below at bedtime I have a slice of seeded (granary) bread with peanut butter. I always wake to levels around 4.x.

p.s. I see you are from Huddersfield - I'm from Brighouse originally! Woo West Yorkshire!🙂

hey all,

I usually have a slice of wholemeal toast with butter if im around 6-7.
if im lower i put jam on it.
or sometimes i will have 2-3 oatcakes.

If my BS is less than 7 at the time I take my Levemir I just have some toast. I'm always 4.5 - 5.5 in the morning, which I'm happy with. 🙂

I can go to bed with levels of say 15 and wake at 5-6 and I can also go to bed 5-6 and wake up there.
If I choose to have a bedtime snack- it's because I want one, and I usually have a smoothie, or chocolate or something sweet.

just to add, whatever you are doing currently Emma it seems to be working, you have brilliant A1cs!

Thinking of dental health, best to avoid acidic foods eg fruit or fruit juice before bed, even though you'll brush your teeth before sleeping. Something with longer acting carbohydrate eg cracker or toast is probably best. If waking with higher blood sugars than you'd like, then worth setting alarm and testing eg 2am / 3.15am or whatever.

Interesting,
If your BGL drops over night or your metabolism doesn't seem to be predictable, then it is obviously extremely important to take something to avoid a hypo.
I'm not in the UK so advice differs. I was told that ideally, your basal should work so that BGL doesn't rise or fall more than about 20mg/dl (just over 1mol) overnight.
They did spend a lot of time in hospital working on this . When I went on a pump, I also spent 3 days as an in patient, with checks through the night to make sure basals were OK.
My doctor first said that I should have a snack at bedtime if under 120(6.mmol) The consultant, they were both in my hospital room at the time, argued with her and said that it really shouldn't be necessary unless under 90(5mmol). I've stuck with the 90, and adjust basals if I start having hypos or BGL start rising overnight. For safety, I quite frequently test levels in the early hours to make sure I'm not missing anything.

I have a slice of toast with almond nut butter (like peanut butter but without the peanuts) and either a glass of milk or some form of hot milk drink. Seems to be working ok so far.
