Hi Laura,
have a look in the pump forum at the sticky about basal testing.
Then have a go at testing your basal if you haven't done so already.
Hope you feel a bit more positive soon. We all have rocky patches every now and again. 🙂

Hi sue.
Can you do basal tests when you don't have a pump? Just my pump appointment isn't til April (which I can't wait to find out if the pct will fund it)

Hi Laura, most def you can basal test on MDI 🙂

If a consultant says you need a pump the pct can not refuse the funding 🙂
Buy yourself the book pumping insulin well in advance of having a pump. It's worth it's weight in gold.

Hi Laura,

Alex (14) and I had this conversation recently and he has a different view of it. Alex was diagnosed at 10 so does remember not being diabetic. Alex's view is that whilst he would love a cure - he also has met so many friends through being diabetic (we go to many meet-ups and Conferences where he meets others his age and has made a lot of friends) that he would feel really sad if he hadnt met them. He did say that it would be good if there was a cure and they could all join the 'non diabetics' club' and talk about the old days when they checked their BG's! He does of course think about complications but not in any sort of morbid way - he says that whilst he doesnt *want* diabetes he certainly doesnt feel his life is any different or that he wont achieve what he wants in life - he is planning to be very rich and live in a Penthouse flat with lots of ladies after him - but he will be just a one woman man! Alex also feels that there are worse things to be diagnosed with and he sort of 'likes' being diabetic as it makes him who is.🙂

We dont wrap him in cotton wool and his sisters (older than him) never let him use the diabetes card which I think goes some way to making him feel normal if you see what I mean. His sister Hannah (21) will not EVER let him away with anything sporty as she is really competitive and wont let Alex off with anything! Not sure if others would feel that is mean - but I personally think thats life - get used to it because the world wont make allowances! Alex is always cheerful and is popular with boys and girls - his diabetes doesnt hold him back from anything that his peers enjoy and you couldnt want more than that.😉🙂Bev

I went for a pump when I was about 16 & the pct said my control was too good to have one which mum was more disappointed about than me but my nurses are the ones who said a pump will be best for me to help with my hypos etc.

Can you get that book in waterstones? May have a look tomorrow

Yes but make sure it's the latest update - version 5 I think? - mine's reincarnation 4 LOL

Defintely can get it on Amazon anyway, but if Waterstones is handy from work, and not in stock - they can get it in a couple of days anyway.

Hi Laura, no offence taken & i mean that aswell ! I have had 47yrs of sticking pins & carb counting & numbers & numbers & numbers THAT you HAVE to get right. I would employ any T1 because i know they are a determed bunch. 😎 I would like a week off :D

Hi Bev i total agree with you about not using it as an excuse ! I think i have a big determanation not to be beaten in anything, Was British National Champ 🙂

Bev, sounds like you have a well balanced lad there, credit to you ! I can only hope for the same.

Laura, we found " pumping insulin" on amazon, I would not be without it, just wish we had had it in advance of pumping!

🙂

Hi Bev.

I was Alex's age when I was diagnosed so I remember non diabetic life & had his outlook until it came to going to school & then work.
My friends at school wouldn't let me sit with them coz I had to inject & work treat me unfairly when I'm hypo or having an off day with my bloods.
Yes being diabetic has made me listen more to my body (as I'd never go to the docs or be off sick unless I was dying) but I now am wanting to have a family (yes I need a bf first & that security) but the chat my nurse had with me at 15 is there at the back of my mind nagging me.

*phew* I tend to open my mouth & then think oh c**p, I've offended someone.

Well I'm going to work on a holiday home for diabetes so all diabetics can send it for a week off, ill let you know when I figure out how to do it

Hi Laura,

How awful of your friends to do that to you!😱Luckily Alex isnt shy - he is confident and says what he thinks so would likely tell his friends to naff off if they treated him like that! Obviously Alex hasnt gone through the whole 'being in love' situation or intimacy so he hasnt experienced some of the more adult issues - but I would like to think that he will find a way around anything that might become a worry. He has a great sense of humour so hopefully will find it useful in any tricky situations! Work really dont have a right to treat you unfairly either - you are covered to a certain extent by the Equal Opportunities Act. Do you have a HR at work that you could talk these issues over with?🙂Bev

I think it was narrow mindedness but the girl who lead the whole you can't sit with us was diagnosed as a type 1 when she was 17 & wondered why I wasn't there for her, yes I should of been the bigger person but that hurt.

I don't know if others will agree with me here but I'd make sure Alex checks his bloods before being intimate, I do it as a hypo in the moment is a passion killer.

I don't have a HR dept at work but I work for lawyers but thankfully I have 2 barristers who are diabetic who will fight my corner.

I had one nasty hypo where the paramedics where called & my boss made me walk to the other side of the city on a delivery (as he said it would do me good & I could have an early lunch). It made me mad that I was being made to do it but I was exhausted by the time I got to where I had to go

Hi Laura,

That isnt good is it! Workplaces have to make 'reasonable adjustment' and asking you to walk after such a low hypo is not making a 'reasonable adjustment' is it. Did the boss understand that you would feel quite ill after such a low? How soon after the low did you have to walk? This doesnt seem right at all.😱Bev

I had the hypo in the early hours of the morning in my sleep & stupidly went into work, as when I've been off sick due to my hypos my boss doesn't believe me.
It was maybe 8/9 hours after.

Mum told me I was fitting in my sleep & I only came to after the paramedics arrived. They stayed for over an hour trying to get my bloods up.
