Hi everyone,
I'm trying to put a food hamper together for a 96 year old man with type 2. He likes plain foods and loves sweet things. Have just read that the diabetic jams and sweets are not so healthy. So far I have got Almonds and fruit. Any ideas please?
 
What types of fruit do you have in there? As some find some fruits spike them quite badly as well as they can be high in carbohydrate as well

I put a hamper together for my 87 year old grandad but he's not diabetic, so he's got 3 jars of jam, tea bags, a box of chocolate truffles (these can actually be quite low carb depending on the cocoa % so the higher the cocoa the lower carb) I got his from Lidl's which are just over 3g carbs per truffle, and a couple of boxes of biscuits (have a look around you can get biscuits that are relatively low in carbs)

What about dark chocolate coated brazil nuts? a small selection of cheeses?

Thank you Kaylz, I will have to get myself to Lidl. Are all cheeses good? Could I get wensleydale with cranberries or apricot? Biscuits for cheese (any particular type)? I just got bananas and apples but if these are no good they won't go to waste and I could get something else.
 
Banana's are very high in carbs and generally hit the system pretty quick, quicker when riper especially

Hard cheese's don't have carbs worth worrying about (less than 0.5g per 100g generally) but soft cheese's can vary, the likes of fruit containing cheese's usually have 10+g carbs per 100g but then nobody's going to sit and eat that in one go really so the stated serving size will give you how many grams of carbs are in that

I don't eat biscuits for cheese or anything but if limited to a few at a time then I wouldn't see any problems with that, just have a look at the carb content as you go, it can be time consuming but I've been at it 3 years now lol

I wouldn't necessarily limit it for him too much as it is Christmas and if he watches himself the rest of the year then a small indulgence wouldn't have a huge impact in the grand scheme of things, I'm sure he could just have a few wee nice treats a day etc

Does he like pepperami and things like that?
 
Tins of ham and corned beef perhaps, but preserved things are low on my shopping list. I do buy sugar free jellies, ground coffee, and lots of cheeses but nothing adulterated with fruit as it is high sugar. Nuts such as walnut, hazel, brazil, almond, which are all low carb can be found ready shelled.
If you are going to visit to deliver, then call in at the supermarket and buy prepared salad, radishes celery, beetroot, coleslaw, frozen berries, cauliflower and low carb mixtures of veges, double and single cream, maybe some strawberries, can all be got to him in good condition.
