keeping to my diet just a few things to think about. What about jams and marmalade I have been using very little jam, the nurse said don't buy any special jams just use what you have but scrape it on and scrape it off ?? That I have been doing.
Also what do we have when going out for a meal,at the moment not getting on with sweet potato so just eating extra veg and no potato, we like fish cakes but thinking about the potato ?? I did say I were very determined person !
Another thing what can I do about passing a lot of water every morning,do not get up in the night,I must go about 5 times first thing difficult to plan journeys in the mornings when going away, at the moment cutting down on the drinks of tea,one cup of tea I'm I'm off to the bathroom a few times !
Any tips from anyone would be helpful.

I still eat out quite regular. I sometimes have steak, sweet potato fries and veg. One pub we go to quite a lot have been great with swapping things for me. I will have omelette with salad or veg with 1 or 2 New potatoes. Or roasted fish with vegetables. And sauces/dressing I have on the side.
As for jam, I stopped having it after diagnosis as I like it nice and thick on toast!

There was a recent thread about ultra-low-carb fish cakes using celeriac instead of spud.

As for the topic of this thread, have you tried reading through the threads in the "Food + carb queries" and "Recipes" forums? Plenty of good ideas there.

Also, I agree with your nurse; so-called "diabetic" foods (which are wrongly labelled anyway, the correct term would be "diabetes-friendly" if it were true) are overpriced, just as bad for one's health as the ordinary equivalents, and liable to cause gastric problems besides.

Christo, hopefully as your blood sugar levels improve you will feel less need to go to the loo so often 🙂 Well done on your determination to do what you can to change your diet 🙂

Christo, do you take milk in your tea or on cereal? I ask because milk is a diuretic, it makes you go more often and if your blood glucose levels are still running high, it might make things worse. Just a thought.

I also had a thought. Are you on any blood pressure medication? Some of these act as a diuretic, i.e, they make your body get rid of some of the fluid, so you need the loo more.

Do you like peanut butter, Christo? I sometimes have a slice of toast with Whole Earth Crunchy peanut butter and it doesn't seem to spike. Or sometimes I have a little of the reduced sugar (not diabetic) marmalade from Waitrose, which is a very nice treat. I'm going off milk - I have a very tiny drop of skimmed milk in tea now, and am reducing the amount in coffee. It's just beginning to taste too, er, milky, to me now...

Almond milk is a refreshing drink to have for a change, too, and is virtually carb-free, depending on the brand.

I had to smile ....do I like peanut butter,my husband and I have a bit of fun over peanut butter, always asking me if I would like to try it, I cannot stand the smell of it, my husband just loves it, years ago as a child growing up at home my brother also liked peanut butter again did not like the smell. Now you my friend asked if I liked Peanut butter ......!

Mmmm, I love it! I also love Marmite 😉 and sometimes have Marmite toasted soldiers with my boiled eggs 🙂

Oh dear... not keen on Marmite, I can have very little on toast but not very often, most other foods I do like.
Trying to get used to sweet potato will not eat the white potato now,I notice it does not need much cooking.
No more white bread for me,how about you ?
Christo.

No, I didn't like white bread much anyway, and I tend to stick to Burgen now. I'd like to try Lidl's protein rolls which a lot of people here recommend, but we only have a small Lidl and they don't stock it. Somebody mentioned here a sunflower & honey(?) bread from M&S, so I might try and look for that.

I think by now I like brown bread better then white, Sunflower & honey bread from Marks sounds nice so we shall try and get some from Marks Thank you for that.
Lidl's rolls look nice I have seen them, they soon sell out of things so maybe we should go early
It's good to share information here.

The way I would look at this would be that the jam/marmalade is not the 'bad' thing, but it forms part of a combination with bread and it is the whole combo of carbs that I need to check whether I can cope with. So if I had two slices of the same bread and slathered jam on one, but scraped it on the other then there would be a difference. *But* I could also change the bread - most white/brown sliced breads are 18-20g CHO per slice. Burgen Soya and Linseed has many more grains, and a much lower carb count at 12g/slice. It is also often relatively kind on BG levels (though you have to check each thing for yourself sadly). So if I switched to Burgen I can have a smallish (but not punitively small) helping of Marmalade and still only get up to the carb count of a 'bare' slice of other breads.

I personally would be tempted to avoid jam, no matter how small the portion. Jam is basically sugary fruit boiled to remove the fibre and mixed with sugar, making it pretty much a perfect storm.

However...I've literally just thought a bizarre alternative.

Jam is basically gunge-y fruit. So I'm wondering...what if you made sugar-free jelly, but made it with a bit more water than normal so it's slightly runny? Then it'd be a bit like jam but then also zero carb (although as Mike points out, you still have the other culprit in the form of the bread).

Actually, if you've ever bought any value range jam, it looks just like runny jelly.:D
