I have been given an appointment to attend Retinopathy Screening on Friday at 11.30 however this clashes with a carb counting course I have been put on by my clinic. I have spoken to the dietician who is taking the course and asked if I could nip out of the class for 1/2 hour to attend the screening (it's in the building opposite). She said the class is too important and should ask to have my screening appt put back to lunchtime. Phoned them and they also said no they can't accomodate me. It's 11.30 or a wait of a couple of months (end of November). I had my heart set on going to the class as I really want to get my head round the eating side of things and being able to work out my own doses. Is the Retinopathy screening a priority or do you think it's OK to wait til Nov?

Cheers

If it was left to me I'd change the retinal screening for later in the day or onto another day. I've had to change screening appointments a couple of times because they clashed with things I couldn't change that were also important.

I can only speak for myself - but I think I'd go for the carb.counting course 'cos after all the end of November isn't that far away for your retinopathy appointment - unless you are having doubts about your eyes being affected in any way then I'd change it round the other way. Not very much help I guess but good wishes whatever you choose.

Will this be your first scan Raymond? If so, I would say you can afford to wait acouple of months unless you have any particular concerns. You could always get one done privately before then as most opticians do them now and I don't think it's too expensive. I had to wait a few months for my first scan. Seems a bit over the top to suggest that you can't afford to nip out of the course for half an hour though, but I suppose the tutor knows the course and what might be cropping up at the time.

Yes Northener, it's my first scan. Came back from holiday to 4 different appts for various things! Flu jab, consultant appt, carb course and Retinopathy screening. Hoping it's because they are all due and that they don't know something I don't!

I'd be doing the carb counting course first too.

My optician will do the test, I don't recall it being that expensive. Although when I went in for a sight test after I had been diagnosed diabetic my optician did the test for me anyway at no charge.

I'd certainly stick with the carb counting course. End of November is no time, and as it's your first screening as a T1 I'd hope there would be very little chance of any background changes.

Hi I think the eyes are much more important and should be put first. The course is very helpful and informative, but by missing a hour or less, it is not going to cause big problems. I am really shocked that the dietician said that to you. Do what you feel is the right thing for you. I hope both go well. Sheena

I would attend the carb counting course. Your eyescreening will only be postponed by 1 month. That's not very long.

BUT I am a bit surprised the nurse couldn't let you leave for 30 minutes or that the eye screening people couldn't add you at the end. You're not exactly an extra person they need to screen, you're just a bit later and the others get seen first.

Good luck with your decision
