I never go that low but I'm not on medication. My body maintains itself at no less than 5 it seems but usually not less than 5.9 even if I haven't eaten for a very long time.
People without diabetes can drop below 4. I once tested my daughter after she had been bouncing around on the trampoline and had t eaten for ages and she was 3.2!
Goosey - that's cos T1s are injecting non-natural insulin in a 'lump' - and once we've jabbed it in, we're stuck with it till it's finished working - whereas someone with a working pancreas simply drips it in in teeny teeny amounts that the body can't get overwhelmed by - so is most unlikely to drop dangerously low if they're not on a drug that can cause that to happen.
You're not on one of those sort - hence a bit lower than 4 is most unlikely to be a problem - so that's why you didn't get any signals from your brain. If you dropped more and were approaching 3.3 - you should get signals though - cos anything below 3.3 it's clinically proven to have an effect on the brain !
Have you discussed your sister's BG with your doctor - cos sounds to me like you may have some sort of familial tendency to blood glucose metabolisation. Any other close family handy you can ambush and test?
I regularly have readings below 2 - I think my lowest readable one was 1.6, but I've also had a LO, ie too low to measure, and I've never gone into a coma (though I can't answer for what it's doing to my brain!).
I shouldn't worry about a 3.9 when you're not on hypo-inducing meds - as people have said this would be a normal reading for non-diabetics. In fact, probably means you're doing rather well on the Metformin!
@goosey - I'm one of those who runs low these days. My fasting range is 3.5-.4.5 and I am routinely lower in the afternoons and some evenings.
My take on it is that my body has recovered from the stress of when I was running higher, and it's now looking after me pretty well. I have never taken any medication and I don't "treat" the low number. The times I'm very low (under 3), I'm also pretty hungry, and it'll be near a mealtime. If the meal is about to be served, I just wait. If it's some way off, I'll usually just have a cup of tea, with a splash of milk, and that'll keep me happy.
I've never been a snacker, so tend just not to eat between meals isn't my way.
lowest I've went is 4 as it does worry me going lower thankfully haven't but did have a stinking sore head and felt really woozy to boot.
Not on any meds either.
