We consider a spike to be anything over about 4mmols above the pre-meal level. So if Alex is 6mmols pre-meal and then goes up to 10 at the 2 hour mark then we call it a spike and give a small correction as there is still active insulin from the food bolus so we do it conservatively.
Ideally you shouldnt go up more than 2mmols from your pre-meal level at the 2 hour mark - but this is quite hard to get spot on as there are so many variables that can alter things like fatty foods or the ratio being out etc.. It also depends how tight you want your control - some people dont test at the 2 hour mark and so are likely to be back down to an acceptable level at the 4 hour mark.🙂Bev
