Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,
Been type 2 since 1993, not really taken much notice of the condition, turned up at the clinic and had the prod, jabs, tests etc on a regular basis without any surprises.

That was until today when I was advised that I'll be type 1 by Christmas, trying some other medication for a few months, but my nurse dosen't hold out much hope that it'll work.

Bit of a wake up call for me...!!!!

Is there any suggestions, tips or places to look for help when/if I cross over.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Sounds a bit strange! As far as I know, you don't change from Type 2 to Type 1. Perhaps they mean that you will start taking insulin? I think before they called diabetes Type 1 and Type 2 they were called insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM) and non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM). Type 1's do not produce any insulin, whereas Type 2's may be producing significant amounts of insulin but the body cannot use it properly due to 'insulin resistance'. Many Type 2's do eventually end up on insulin when their pancreas gets 'tired out' from producing so much insulin.

Do you know what your HbA1c is? What medication/regime are you currently on?

hi dave a warm welcome what miedication are you on if any ? x

Hi Northerner,
Thanks for putting me straight, wasn't listerning too well when she gave me the news, it will be insulin dependent, I naturally assumed you change types. I dont know what my HbA1c is. I'm currenty on:-
1500mg per day of Glucophage
6mg per day of Amaryl
40mg per day of Lipitor
75mg per day Aspirin
And was given today 30mg of Actos.
She also mentioned that the Pancreas was showing signs of slowing down. Apprantley everything thing else is OK, will have further blood tests beginning of Sept then one in Oct. Decision will be taken then.

Thanks again,

Dave.

Hi Steff,
Thanks for the welcome, meds above with Northerner. You on insulin?

Hi Davee..

In Type 2 diabetes, the body's ability to produce insulin does'nt completely disappear. But the body becomes increasingly resistant to insulin, so tablets are needed to balance this. The tablets don't contain insulin, but act by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin, or by increasing the release of insulin form the pancreas. Its rare for insulin injections to be needed in the early diagnosis/stages of type 2 diabetes.

Although type 2 diabetes is also called non insulin-dependent diabetes, many people need treatment with insulin at a later stage in much the same way as type 1 diabetes.

I believe a new generation of medication is being used in adult with type 2 diabetes (glitazones). These tablets make the body more sensitive to insulin, and may be helpful in other ways...eg...Lowering the level of fats in the blood, and reducing blood pressure.

Hi Dave, welcome aboard 🙂

Just wondering, have you tried changing your diet at all to help control your diabetes? It would be very helpful for you to know your HbA1c result, so you should really ask your DSN about that.

Thanks Sasha & Katie,

My diet appears to be OK ran through with Dawn, my nurse, who reckons its pretty healthy, dont drink much, unless Saracens lose, thinking about it, must be drinking a lot...!!!!

I'll get the result of the HbA1c and post it.

Just spoken to a mate who's just been put on Byetta, anyone heard of it? Supposed to be pretty expensive but he pressured his doc.

I'm 51, 5'11 and weight about 12 stone, and I will admit now I smoke, but Ive an appontment with the smoking nurse next week. Perhaps I was in panic mode when I joined but thinking about it now I just have to adapt and get on with it.

Hi Davee...

I think regarding the Byetta....Steff is waiting to hear if her doctor will prescribe it...so I'm sure when Steff comes back on the forum...she will be able to help you as regards to this..🙂

Ahhhhh...the smoking....🙂..its one of the hardest things to give up...but please try cause it will be of big benefit to you..Brightontez has just given up he been smoke free for 2 weeks....So look out for Tez coming on I'm sure he would be able to give you some tips🙂

Now I'm no expert on the weight and height issue..but personally would think that was ideal..

Once you have your HbA1c....you will have a better understanding of what you need to acheive...

Hi Davee welcome to the forum , if you need anything just ask , someone will be able to help you 🙂🙂

Dave, stopping smoking is actually one of the best things you could do to help with the diabetes. I smoked for 20 years, but stopped after reading a book called 'The Easy Way to Stop Smoking' by Allen Carr - if you can get hold of a copy, I think it will help. Smoking increases insulin resistance amongst all its other lovely side effects, so your blood sugar levels will improve almost instantly when you stop smoking. Good luck!🙂

and stopping smoking also generally feels like winning the lottery financially I have heard!

Welcome Davee, as you can see lots of people here to answer all sorts. good luck with everything.

Thanks addict, cant believe how helpful everyone has been, really nice.

No problem Davee , if you want to know anything just ask , there are no stupid questions here , or if there are Ive already asked them :D We are all learning something new everyday about Diabetes , hmm usually that it doesnt play by the rules or keeps changing them 😱 if you ever want a rant or a chat there is usually someone in the oneliners thread , all are welcome to come in there and have a laugh, moan or whatever .

Welcome Dave,

I think that katie's point about diet could be helpful to you. Although you might have a healthy diet you might want to look at the amount and type's of carbohydrate you are eating.

Are you self moniotring? If not then i would stringly suggest that you get a meter and start testing, I don't think there are any members here that don't feel testing is useful if not vital.

Hi Sofaraway,
Have a tester and only really used it when I felt a bit dodgy. Since Tues I have tested several times and the reading has been between 13 and the last one tonight was 19 something.
Dave.

Hope all goes well for you Davee and welcome.

That good that you are able to test. I think some extensive testing would be very helpful to you to find out where your particular problems are and that way you can tackle them. You probably need to be doing a full panel of testing, before and after every meal to see what different foods are doing to your blood sugars. If you need any help you can always ask here for suggestions
