What did you find hard to give up??

BOOM BOOM Northerner!

well, I was diagnosed aged 8 (and didn't live in the UK before that anyway) so I've not really known anything other than the way I eat now (Ie I can have some biscuits, cake etc I just have to bolus for it).

But the thing I find hardest, like others have said, is fruit - I used to snack on that a lot but in the last month or 2 I've really pulled my socks up in terms of watching what effect my foods have on my sugar levels and found that it's so hard not being able to nibble on that when I'm peckish for what it does to my levels. Especially given I'm on SW and that's what they focus heavily on in terms of food to snack on if you're hungry!!

and who was it mentioned Bakewell tarts? *shudders* Go sit in the corner Mike, and think about what you've said..... 😉

Never understood why anyone wants to drink anything THAT sweet. A sip yes, but a glass of it? 😱 You can feel your teeth rotting .....

Acquire a taste for Manhattan Dry ..... or take the easy way out and drink G & T .....

Are you meaning what I said? Lovely fresh orange juice is delicious *salivates*

I do drink G&T (slimline) now all the time cos I hate diet coke and it's all bars EVER have as diet soft drinks - grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Or just wine.

By the bottle. 😉 😛

I'm joining SW tonight for the first time...have done WW in the past. I'd love to know your experiences of it!!

I have reintroduced fruit, I did cut loads of it out but I miss it so much, and find if I plan it with a meal then it's fine, but even as a snack I am getting much better at bolusing for it! Wouldn't do it all the time but it seems like a proper treat now!!

Hi Laura, glad you've decided to give SW a try. There are several of us members who post in the Weight Loss Group, so if you get stuck just ask. 🙂

Acid in orange juice .... placque. Pineapple juice - enzymes that destroy your gums .......

As well as 'sweet'.

I rest me case m'Lud. :D

Oh Laura you have no idea how pleased I am (rather selfishly!) that another T1 is trying SW. I won't lie, it's hard for diabetics that have to bolus for food and worry about things like what protein does to insulin absorption, how XX amonut of fat with something will change the way you bolus etc etc. And dont' get me started on their 'if you're hungry eat lots of fruit!'. Being completely honest, SW says they cater for daibetes but one quick overview of the diet (and the leaflet they gave me on dieting with diabetes) shows that they have clearly written it for diabetics that are controlling via healthy eating and tablets alone. There's no real 'taking into account' for things like having to eat a load of sugar for hypos, how a protein only meal can afect your sugar levels unpredictably (and not enough confirmed research currently unfortunately on how to manage insulin doses with low carb, high protein meals).

Perhaps we can bash our heads together and muddle though! Good luck and let me know how you get on.

I miss my frequent home-made lasagnes.

At over 3,000kcals per portion (i.e. one of my 'man-size' portions) it is not something I can contemplate more than once in a blue moon!

I didn't have one in 2012, perhaps 2013 will be the year!!

Andy :D

I made a couple, insted of using meat, i used meat free mince (no horses in that one lol) and i didn't use pasta 1 was made with courgets and another with leeks, there are plenty or recipies on the net. Not the real thing and not as nice but an alternative.

I tell myself I haven't given up anything but of course there are some foods or quantities or combinations of such that are too much hassle- would require insulin manoeuvres which are too clever for me
Lately I've been fantasising re carb laden stodge- think it's the cold weather
Keep visualising home made macaroni cheese- macaroni cooked al dente with lovely buttery cheesy sauce then grilled to brown the top ( non of your icky processed macaroni cheese or overcooked canteen stuff with sauce resembling mixture of vomit and wallpaper paste). Served with either massive crusty ciabatta roll or oven baked spud - oil and salt rubbed in skin to crisp it up, lashings of salted butter
Then treacle tart swimming in a sea of custard
Have I got problems-
would probably be upwards of 250 g carb or even more in one meal! and a weeks worth of correction boluses to get it down
