Have you ever been asked that question by any of the health professionals you have seen since being diagnosed? If not why not?

The diabetic nurse I saw at the surgery started by listing all those things I should avoid, sugar in my tea, cakes and biscuits, fizzy drinks. Well I have never taken sugar in drinks and don't drink fizzy drinks. She then told me what I should eat and seemed totally disinterested in knowing what my normal breakfast was as 'all cereals except Weetabix had too much sugar'

The education course I went on (DERIK) was scheduled to be an all day course, it was over in around 3 and a half hours. The two ladies leading the group had what seemed to be a set number of points that they needed to get across and didn't have time to advise individuals on changes they could make to their diet. NOTE that I say changes they could make, not just telling them that certain things were now taboo.

Surely if you sat someone down and asked them to tell you what they ate in a typical day pre diagnosis you would get a rough idea of how easy/difficult it would be for them to adapt to a healthier eating plan? Ok so we may all underplay just how many biscuits we have with our cups of tea during the day, but it would give a basis from which to go forward. Useful hints on how to adapt could then be suggested

The NHS, with its lack of money and staff, are probably not in a position to offer tis kind of care, I can but dream

I was never told what I ate pre-diagnosis by anyone. What I did eat was bad though. I would indulge in things like Bakewell tarts, jam tarts, Ginsters pasties & chocolate bars.😳

In the six months before my diagnosis, 17 years ago, I was living on lucozade! I had a cold every few weeks & had lost my taste & everything was so bland. So, didn’t really eat & just drank lucozade!

Weetabix? Wow! 69g carbs per 100g... not exactly good for Type 2... /me goes and knocks head against wall

Not pleasant.

Yeah! Hindsight told me I was headed for diaster! At diagnosis my HBA1c was 14%, old money!

You REALLY don't want to know lol 🙄😱

Seriously though folks, did any of the health professionals actually give you any positive help on what changes to make or have you only got to where you are today by educating yourself?

Aw, Vince! 🙂 It can’t be THAT BAD! I’ve just admitted to living on lucozade! Until recently, used to treat hypos in hospitals! Yes, I DO see the irony in that! 🙄

Immediately before diagnosis, quite a lot of Caramacs LOL

Nobody eats 100g weight of Weetabix, which is 13g carb per biscuit so you're suggesting the nurse would be telling people they had to have 4 of em for their breakfast - I don't somehow think anyone would say that!

Depends on your normal portion too of course - mine always was and still is, one - so with the milk is still hardly a carb fest even were I T2.

It's like a lot of things they used to do and now have forgotten how.

My DSN is on the ball. Told me to cut carbs & go for wholemeal ones if I had anything at all. Also told me meat is fine.

I had a session with a dietitian and we went through all I would eat over the course of a week. As I was 16, a veggie and very healthy she said my diet was perfect and I didnt need to change anything.

Now I am a grown up I can buy my own food and drink and I dont behave as well as I did then!

Trophywench - i love Caramacs. They now do giant Caramac buttons! they are amazing, do not buy them!!!

I know! And the way they crush and mash the wheat to make it into those bisks always seemed to mean it hit my BG like rocket fuel.

I don't go in for GI tables much (as I have known too many people have too different reactions to foods to trust them) but out of interest the GI of Weetabix is 69, while sucrose is 65. Which means carb for carb on average you would be slightly better off BG-wise just eating several spoonfuls of sugar. 🙄

I was diagnosed in Spain and told my plate should be one third carbs, and I should have most carbs at lunchtime, not in the evening. I have learnt much more on here than from any healthcare professional. Bless you all x

I ate everything. My family called me Hoover.
Pasta was my downfall, savoury not sweet food.

Rice featured a lot in my diet...... Or failing that wholewheat pasta..... The not so common alternative was potato. My drink of choice in those days was Rum & diet, that might have been an issue, now it's red wine (usually Merlot)

As for sweet stuff, almost never....

Very rarely ate proper meal,
Ice cream,Farleys rusk,sweets,chocolate,donner kebabs 3/4 times a week,cakes,biscuits,
