Sooooooooooooo much to take in! leaflets one after the other!....so straight to the point, I have a prescription for Humulin with 2 pens etc!!
I have to inject twice a day.
So pick up drugs tomorrow, as chemist was closed when I got out of the surgery.
It feels all so strange...... < blank stare > 🙂

Glad you got through it! Humulin eh? Don't know a lot about that, but I'm sure there are others here who do 🙂 What doses have been suggested for you?

Congratulations for making it through the day! :D Good luck tomorrow.

Several possibilities, as there are several insulins with Humulin in their names:

Humulin S (short acting)

Humalin I (moderate to long acting)

Humalin M3 (biphasic / bimodal - mixture of short and long acting)

Hi Ant,
there are 2 or 3 insulin's called Humulin, has it got a number after it? Sounds to me as if the nurse has gone for the cheapskate/lazey option and stuck you on the mixed insulin. Which means you will have to have exactly the same amount of carbs for each meal plus a mid morning and afternoon snack and supper so you feed the insulin.

There you go Ant have a read of that. It's a mixed insulin as I suspected.
Now please do read your prescription carefully because if it says 10 ml vials, they are no good for you unless you have been issued with syringes and not pens,
Always roll your pen or vial gently before each use so both insulin's are well and truly mixed together.

Well you will have to because adjusting for a carb loaded meal one day and a moderate carb meal the next does not work with that routine.

Did she write down the doses you should take? If you are not sure, then don't guess - ask to see her again to make sure.

The type of insulin you have been given has two elements - a slow-acting element which will take care of the glucose that is constantly being trickled out by your liver (it does this to provide energy to your heart, lungs, brain, digestive system etc. when you are not eating). There is also a faster acting element which is used to 'cover' the carbohydrates in the food you eat, and any drinks with carbs in them. As you will not be injecting for a specific meal and its carb content, you will need to make sure your blood sugar levels are kept 'topped up' so that the match the insulin you have injected. This isn't the most flexible regime since, as Sue says, you may have to eat when you don't want to in order to match the insulin.

I would see how it goes, and if you find things difficult then ask to go on a basal/bolus regime, where you have a slow-acting (for your liver) and a fast-acting for your meals.

If that's the case and it def says 10ml vial you need to contact the nurse pronto because the pens can't be used with vials. She needs issue you with cartridges to go in the pens.

It does not fill me with confidence that you both agree that it is not the best insulin for me....she did mention the dose, I assume it would be on the package from the pharmacist? im sure she said 10 units!.....Im so sorry for lack of info, was so much to take in :(
I have done my best!!! I promise 🙂

You are doing very well 🙂 Everything will be upside down and back to front until you sort things out. Just don't panic and take one day at a time. I'm sure the dose will be on the pkt, if it's not then ask.
When you take the prescription ask to speak to the pharmacist so you know what's what. I doubt they will have what you need in stock so you might have to wait 24 hours for the stuff anyway.

Also read the prescription again....... are you sure it says vials and doesn't say 10 units?

No worries Ant, you need to get the dose information right before anything else, I think it is unlikely to be on the medication. A lot of people do fine on this insulin, so as I said, wait and see how it works for you, but know that there are other options available.
