Hi there.. not sure what’s happening to me!
Newly diagnosed Type 2 started on Metformin. Had a lovely home call today from Diabetic Consultant at hospital who want to start me in Glycazide too! as blood sugars high.
Being sent for CT ABDO/ Pelvis ? ? Pancreatic cancer and also ‘antibodies’. Is this normal?
Thank you

Welcome to the forum @Salmepal

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Great to hear the Docs are being thorough.

Seems like there must be a few aspects of your presentation which have made them think they need to do a bit more digging to ensure they have an accurate picture.

Were you told the result of your HbA1c? This will be a number above 47mmol/mol (but may be much higher) and is a measure of long term glucose concentration in the bloodstream over the past 3-4 months.

Were you losing weight without trying to before your diagnosis?

Hi there,, thanks for your reply.
My HbAlc was 130 … which I know is extremely high.
Only one measurement taken thiugh / thought it might have been repeated to check. My weight loss has been planned xxx

It is usually only when people are borderline that a second test would be done and you are definitely not with an Hba1C that high so you should be reassured that they are going to do some more tests to check nothing too sinister is going on.

Pretty much what happened to me, though they tested antibodies and as they were positive did not do the ct scan.
Sounds like they are doing a thorough job

Yes I was sent for a CT scan when my symptoms first presented , my Dr said it was so they could rule out pancreatic cancer as a cause.

My HbA1c wasn't as high as yours but like @Martin62 I was sent for a CT scan to rule out pancreatic cancer, which it did.

Consider yourself lucky they are being really thorough. My HbA1c was over 100 but I didn't get a CT scan. I did subsequently get antibody testing though and that came back positive. Definitely the lesser of 2 evils if the other option is pancreatic cancer, but there are other problems with the pancreas which can cause diabetes like cysts or pancreatitis or necrotizing damage, so the cancer is only a very small risk of the possible outcomes and far better to be found early if the worst comes to the worst.

Thank you for your support and prompt reply. I am grateful that GP is supporting me. Just trying to get my head around it all. Xx

Thank you .. it’s just overwhelming really. Mad thing is I’m a Healthcare Professional so feel I should understand it all!! xx

Depending on what the outcome is and what your diagnosis is there is plenty of support and information here about how to manage your condition. What will be best for you will depend on what medication you are almost certainly to be prescribed as not all dietary approaches will be suitable.
Do come back and let us know how you get on and fire away with any questions.
