Doctors can predict which of their diabetic patients are at the greatest risk of heart disease if they use a coronary-artery calcium test with other methods, a group of researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has discovered.
People with Type 2 diabetes have two to four times the risk of cardiovascular disease compared with people without the disease, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The medical center?s study found that the CAC test can identify diabetic patients who are at a very high risk of developing fatal cardiovascular disease as well as those patients who are at low risk.
?Our observations challenge accepted medical knowledge that all people with diabetes have the same risk,? said Donald Bowden, a biochemistry professor at Wake Forest Baptist and the director of its Center for Diabetes Research.
