The NHS in Wales has made significant progress in the past year, despite the challenges it has faced, its chief executive has insisted.

Publishing his annual report today, David Sissling said he believed the health service had made improvements in a number of areas such as transparency and patient care and that he wanted the organisation to be on an ?upward curve?

This is despite major pressures seen by the service in the past year, particularly during winter when health boards reported ?unprecedented demand? on their emergency departments, while A&E consultants warned they were on the brink of ?meltdown?.

Mr Sissling acknowledged that demand for emergency care services had risen ?steeply? last winter, but said that work was being taken forward to address the issue, including looking at different models of care for older people.
