Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all
I'm not so much a newbie as a Type 1 patient of 35 years finally catching up with the 21st Century...I remember the old days of the BDA (British Diabetic Association) with the periodical Balance magazine, aaah, them were the days.

I'm a new recipient of the Freestyle Libre (as of today) and I'm hoping there might be some useful feedback from users of this system plus advice on how to get myself set-up.

I look forward to chatting.

Ciao for now
😎

Welcome to the forum.... Sounds like you are about to inject a breath of fresh air to an already fun forum

Hi Martin,
I certainly hope so. I try not to take life too seriously so as long as there are plenty of readers with a warped sense of humour like yours truly, I'm sure it will be a fun ride.
:D

Hi Spignelbaldmoney, welcome to the forum 🙂 Interesting user name! 😱 :D

One word of warning about the Libre - they can be seriously addictive! Are you getting them on prescription? There are a lot of Libre users here on the forum - I have used the sensors from time to time and have been quite astonished at some of the things I have learned from them. If you have any questions I'm sure the members here will be able to answer them for you 🙂

How have things been for you over the years? I've just passed my first decade, so a relative newbie 🙂 Are you pumping or injecting?

Looking forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi there and welcome to the forum. 🙂 It was the BDA when I was diagnosed. Used to look forward to getting my copy of Balance! 🙄 I can only think I must have had more time on my hands in those days before the internet. :D

Hey there Northerner!
Thanks for the heads-up on Libre addiction, I'll try not to lose the plot if I don't scan for an hour or so. 😉

Over the years (during the war), sorry, Uncle Albert crept in there. I've gone from pork mixtard to human, Actrapid and Monotard, Insulatard, Levemir to Novorapid alone. From syringes to Novopens and eventually onto the Accu-Chek Spirit Combo pump that I'm still sporting since 2009 (I was the first person issued with one of these in England).
I was offered the Insight but found it largely style-over-substance and the glare on the screen on a sunny day made it impossible to use properly.

Many ups and downs over the years especially during my teenage years. It didn't improve much as an adult either but the pump has really helped with control more recently.

How are you controlling the demon?

Hulleoow Matt!
Indeed, t'internet does dictate our daily lives now. Going back to basics is always appealing but then you'd have to put up with the stapler-gun type blood test contraptions from the 80's again...remember those?
...Memories, like the shadows of my mind, la, la, la...

Indeed - the Autolet. 😱:D Having to use what could be considered a mini guillotine to put some blood on a BM strip, wait a minute and wipe it off, wait another minute and then try and match 2 colours on the side of the tube. Yeah it's somewhere between 3 and 20. I know I'll call it 7. :Do_O

Hi, welcome to the forum. Northerner's right, Libre sensors are seriously addictive...and watch out, your door frames will mysteriously narrow when you're wearing one!o_O

@Matt Cycle , I found one of those at the back of the cupboard recently... I still occasionally say BM sticks.🙂

I never intentionally chuck my old diabetes stuff away but I can't find my Autolet. I can only assume it's still at my Mum's somewhere. Quite a few people say BM even those more newly diagnosed probably without knowing what it means. Maybe think it's blood measurement? Obviously stands for Boehringer Mannheim who made the strips who later became Roche.

Hi Spignelbaldmoney
Like you I have stuck with the Combo, and I use this along with my Libre.

As others have said there is so much to learn from the Libre output. Fasting basal tests are a lot easier overnight, test - sleep - swipe. Done. The readings are often a bit out from BG but then they are measuring different things. It is the patterns on the graphs that I am after. I have also identified some foods that make big spikes for me, even ones that were supposed to be good carbs. The direction of travel for the glucose level is one of the most beneficial bits for me, enabling me to head off many hypos and hypers, especially when out for a day of walking. So basically I like having the Libre, it is addictive, and I have been fortunate to meet the criteria for it to be given me on NHS.
