Since July I have gone from 13stone to 9stone 7lb which is now well within my healthy BMI. The problem I now have is I'm still losing weight because my appetite has dwindled and cannot tolerate bigger food portions. I also have a list of foods I won't eat because I'm trying to reduce my cholesterol....

My ideal weight for my height is 10stone 5lb so I'm nearly a stone below that. I'm not underweight so not worried but wondered what others have done to maintain their weight when they have reached their goal.... I know its a case of increasing calarories but how do you do that without increasing sugar levels....

For me losing the weight wasn't difficult because I cut out all saturated fats; some dairy products and all sweet stuff. I try and eat a well balanced diet and am more physically active then I used to be.... but don't want to go to the other end of the spectrum ie. lose too much weight... Hubby has commented I'm becoming bony....

Confused...:(

Remember that BMI has a very broad range for a 'healthy' weight. I have friends who would appear to be my height and build but they are much heavier than me - I naturally tend towards the lower end of my BMI range. I suppose the thing you need to be aware of is are you getting sufficient calories for your activity levels? Nuts are a good source of calories and good fats and minerals 🙂

What is bizzare is I ate loads of walnuts/mixed nuts prior to my 2nd DN appointment and my cholesterol increased so I've cut them out and eggs....hoping to bring my cholesterol down. I do try and eat 5 a day and am thinking of taking multi-vitamins? What do you think?

Hi Amanda you have done brilliantly with the weight loss. your story is very similar to mine. I lost 3 stone within 6 month of diagnosis. My consultation said to me I didn't need vitamins if I had a proper balanced diet. Might be worth asking your health team. Make sure you have a good treat over the festive season, you deserve it xxx.

I know you have gone offline for christmas now, hope you have a good one.

I think you got to a similar position I was in about 3 months ago. I had been steadily loosing weight and I got down to a BMI of 23 at which point I had to increase calories to maintain weight.

My technique was add extra calories and yes, carbs into a few places. I've tended to keep the additional carbs as low GI as possible - which meant lots of nuts. I eat a lot of nuts, yet my cholesterol is OK (3.9)

I seem to recall that your cholesterol measurement was total rather then split out into HDL, LDL, etc. It's possible that because you have been loosing weight there is a raised level of lipids in your blood - because your blood is being used to transport them from the storage areas to where they are consumed for energy. My cholesterol test wasn't until 3 months after I had stopped loosing weight - it's possible that your next one might also be better.

Unfortunately if you don't wants to use fat (nuts, cheese) as a source for the extra calories you need and don't want to use carbohydrates, then there is only one calorific source left - protein!

Nut's shouldn't really be causing high cholesterol as that is normally associated with saturated fats (which most nuts don't contain). Walnuts are actually the best types of nuts because they contain plenty of omega-3 oils which are supposed to help with lowering cholesterol!
