Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
This is the first time I have visited this site so I'am a bit new to all this. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 21 and now at the age of 37 I find that it is getting increasingly difficult to control my weight. I probably need to lose approx 20 pounds to feel comfortable. I did however manage to achieve this last year by practically cutting out rice, pasta and potatoes. My consultant at the hospital did not appear concerned about cutting out certain food groups so long as all my blood tests game back ok (which they did) HBA1c was 6.5. The dietician however has different views. I have now read on an American website that metformin can be used in conjunction with insulin (currently taking Levemir and Novorapid) in order to control blood sugars and weight gain. Due to go to see consultant soon but did not want to ask him as he does not consider me to have a weight problem until I find out the views of others who may understand what I'am going through in order to lose weight.
Sorry message so long.

Hi Kezza,

For me the question is exercise, something that has been distinctly lacking from my life over tha past two weeks. I find that if I exercise regularly it helps with two things. Firstly it helps keep my blood sugars under control. Secondly it helps to keep my weight under control a little. Having said that I reckon I could stand to lose a little being 5'7" and 11.5 stone. So the key to keeping an eye on your weight is exercise no matter what type it is, walking is a great way to start. Keeping an eye on what you eat is also a good idea which it seems that you already do.

Best of luck,

Tom H

Thanks Tom. I know exercise is part of the problem. Ironically I'am same height and weight, and joined the gym today. Going to go back to low carb as well ?
