Thinking of getting myself a bottle of red for the weekend. I haven't had a drink since my diagnosis last month and feeling a bit apprehensive about how it's going to go. But I enjoy watching a bit of telly and have missed a glass of wine, and can't live in fear forever. Does anyone have any advice? Is there any difference in how the different type of wine affects levels, I.e merlot, shiraz etc.

Some tips I have already been given are:

Drink after food
Have a snack during drinks
Have a bit of toast before bed
Possibly reduce basal dose. (If so, by how much?)

Cheers.

Hi @Lizzy78, seems like me and thee are on our own🙂. Get yourself a bottle curl up on the sofa and watch the telly, treat yourself. Merlot tends to be a favourite although if you are a bit wary a Rose` may be more suitable, usually less volume of alcohol. I would restrict yourself to two glasses out of a 75cl. bottle, this will allow you to have 37.5cl per glass 😳:D. Do it just be sensible, enjoy.

The only way to assess how alcohol affects anyone's BG is to set up the scientific experiment where they are the guinea pig! - and test, test, test while you're at it.

It's the only way to learn this job - so enjoy it!

I agree with Jenny, the only way to find out is to be prepared and test, test test 🙂 You may find that different types of drink affect you differently. Depends on how efficient your body is at processing the alcohol too - the liver doesn't multitask, so whilst it is dealing with the alcohol it stops trickling out the glucose that it normally does, which is why it can lead to lower blood glucose levels overnight (if you drink in the evening). Diabetes UK have a brief guide here:

Enjoy! 🙂

Thanks everyone. I have bought myself a bottle of Malbec, so will test, test test and see how it goes.
