Hello all,

Newbie here, diagnosed 2 weeks ago.

I have a lads weekend away already booked and have no idea how to treat it now. I’ve been referred to an NHS information course but unsure when that will happen.

For me a weekend away means drinking, is this still possible? I realise if this is possible it should be limited, what should I have? How have other dealt with this after diagnosis?

Just to clarify to hopefully help with advice, I am type 2 and on metphormin, I don’t have to check bloods. Have felt a little overwhelmed since diagnosis due, have found this forum excellent for info and helping gain an understanding on what has helped others and what hasn’t.

Many thanks

For some people too much alcohol and metformin don't mix too well so be careful with that.
Wines or spirits with diet mixers are the lowest carb rather than beer or cider.
As far a food is concerned then go easy on chips, pizza, pasta, rice based meals and choose protein based meals. You may find that leaving some of the carb heavy food is best though it does go against the grain. Many places will serve extra veg or salad instead of chips or potatoes.
It is only 1 weekend so enjoy.
For the long term then have a look at this link for some ideas for modifying your diet, there are menu plans and recipes as well as very good explanation. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

The advice I was given was no more than 2 drinks a night (because of the glucose lowering effect, and because of insulin and the dangers of people mistaking hypoglycaemia for drunkenness)

Having said that I’ve gradually and cautiously experimented and don’t always stick to the 2 drink maximum personally - but I don’t go mad. Maybe space out alcohol with sugar-free soft drinks?

Hopefully you can find some middle-ground / moderation ways to enjoy the weekend, without completely losing the plot, and aiming to keep your BGs from going unpleasantly out of kilter.
