Hello everyone,

I've been recently diagnosed, but it's not yet clear which type I am. I'm waiting for the results of those exotic tests - C-peptide and anti-GAD thingummy. Meanwhile I'm taking insulin and metformin and doing lots of reading.

Lots of medics think it's likely to be Type 1. I've been on thyroxine for years and had gestational diabetes 11 year ago with my middle child (of 3). I guess I just need to be patient for a week or two more, then I'll deal with whichever type it is.

Thanks so much for all the information on here. I've learned so much already.

Welcome to the Forum Melody. It does sound more like T1 to me with the thyroid thingy added in. At last they've taken a reasonable middle path with the treatment for you till you get the teat results . How are your BGs doing with the meds added?

Yes, I feel like I've been well looked after so far. I'm 3 weeks in with meds and levels have come down nicely. I felt very weird to start with - HBA1C was 97 so lower BG felt urgh at first. Feeling much better now though. It's been a steep learning curve with carb counting and the like but its bringing out my nerdy streak. Writing everything down and working out what works for me. So far so good.

LOL! Sounds like you have it all down pat already. Nerdy streaks are GOOD, especially when faced with a challenge like the Big D.

Hi Melody, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but very good to hear that they have got straight on with the appropriate treatment and tests so they can pin down what type you are 🙂 It sounds like you are doing well - and it's a definite plus to be a bit nerdy in this game (although some healthcare professionals like to think we are 'obsessive' - don't listen to them! 🙂)

Any questions, please let us know and we will be very happy to help out 🙂

Welcome Melody. I am even newer than you so still stumbling in the dark.

Hi melody. Welcome to the forum.

LOL at the Nerd! Hi and I agree - we all need to be nerdy and a tad obsessive/compulsive with it. I feel a GSOH is pretty essential for survival, too actually.

Yet - stick us all in a pub once a year - and nobody would guess! LOL

Hi Melody, and welcome 🙂 - good to hear they are giving you relevant tests. Nerdy is good, I am nerdy too :D

Thank you people, what a brilliant little community this is!

Being nerdy about the little stuff makes the big scary stuff not as scary. Maybe.

New to all this as well - have my spreadsheet already planned out to record levels and changes to food to see what is what - nowt wrong with nerdy😉

Can't beat a decent spreadsheet with with formulae and a bit of of conditional formatting.

I've had my test results back, it seems that I'm type 1. The urine test was inconclusive - apparently it showed that my pancreas is running at around 50% but the blood test was much more obvious. I'm not sure which was which - anti-GAD test or C-peptide test - but the end result is the same.

I'm just happy I didn't have to push for the tests and I was given insulin straight away. I do feel better, still tired but I guess that's to be expected.

Last week was very challenging. I had lots of concerts - as both performer and teacher - Tuesday evening was a big concert and I had BG of 2.6 an hour beforehand. I got through it somehow! Then another full day of rehearsals with constant adjusting for low blood sugars before the penny dropped that it must be 'honeymoon phase'. I gave the insulin a rest for a day then started injecting much lower doses. Feeling more on top of it now. Christmas tree is up, concerts all finished, time to shut the door for a while and regroup.

You're doing really well Melody.

Now - don't forget! Xmas is to be enjoyed.
