Hi Jayne, very sorry to hear that you are being messed around, some reception staff are not the politest of people :( Of course you couldn't go if you were feeling so ill :( I hope that you get over the tummy bug soon. Make sure you keep well-hydrated and that should help. Do they have a walk-in clinic where you are? If you are still feeling bad but able to get out to a surgery or walk-in centre then you could explain your concerns and they would be able to do some tests and give you some general advice until your proper appointment in December.

Hope you are feeling much better soon 🙂

Sorry LJ, are you on any meds for your diabetes, or was that what this appointment was about?

Hi Jayne, I hope you are feeling better. The ammount of time we have to wait for appointments annoys me immensly, I often have to wait a couple of weeks to see my GP. A couple of times I have made an appointment felt worse and been told there are no other appointments so have gone to A&E.

I would not justify rudeness as it is not nice being on the recieving end, I think many medical receptionists failed charm school, but I do understand that some surgeries and clinics do get very busy and the receptionists are under a lot of pressure too.

If you can't get a GP appointment, then you could phone NHS Direct 0845 4647 for advice - or consult a pharmacist, particularly if you think the problem is related to medication, especially as you have several conditions and thus are probably taking several medications. If NHS Direct or pharmacist suggest A&E, then it's easier to go when you can say you've been told to attend by XXX.

Just one specific thought - symptoms of nausea / vomiting / diarrhoea / loose bowels can be side effects of metformin, so juts wondered if you've recently started on that?

I think the issue is that Janie already waited 2 weeks to see her first Diabetes Nurse appointment and now has to wait a further week and a half.

Of course she is now sitting there thinking, am I doing myself any damage waiting with high blood sugars and not receiving any support.

The receptionist was a bit rude, so you might want to mention that when you finally see the DN. If you start feeling really odd or start throwing up or feeling very sleeping you definitely will want hubby to call NHS Direct because you can get a severe hyperglycemia that needs hospital treatment.

Possibly Alan C's getting started page might help too! http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/d-day.html

Drs appointment is good lj, you can discuss your concerns then and explain the appointment problem too.

Just remember you haven't suddenly got type 2, you probably had it some time but didn't know, and whilst it is annoying to have to wait again, dont fret too much about the diabetes.

I had to wait 4 weeks too.

Hi Jayne, as slipper says, you haven't suddenly become much worse because of your diagnosis so there is no immediate problem that could be harmful to you. I would suggest steering clear of sugary or baked goods for now, and keep your carbohydrates on the low side (no need to cut them out completely), this will prevent your levels climbing too high until you are seen. I know it's hard, but try not to worry, and please do ask if there is anything we can help with or you need a shoulder 🙂

The standard of treatment varies so much from one place to another, even one GP to another. I was diagnosed by phone call 8 years ago today. The GP called to tell me I'm Type 1 and had me go and pick up a prescription for Gliclazide there and then with an appontment to see him the following Monday. After that he changes my prescription to Metformin and I had an appointment with the Practice Nurse a couple of weeks later to get more information. After that I just saw the Practice Nurse for my blood tests, unless anything was wrong and I saw the GP.

Earlier this year my levels went out of control and the docs wouldn't listen to my concerns, insisting I wait til my next check up. Even then it took weeks to get any help. I was having readings on my monitor of between 24 and 33 from early February til 12th April!

The thing to remember Jayne is that lots of people out there are Type 2 and don't even know about it. You didn't know til you got that phone call. have you any ideas what your levels are? Nothing bad is likely to happen between now and your appointment. It's not ideal of course, and it's not fair. I'm not trying to trivialise your concerns. I was climbing the walls earlier this year. You can help yourself in the meantime by adjusting your diet (cutting down on carbs if you can) and getting as much excercize as you are able with your other problems. Ask us anything you are worried about and we'll try our best to help and support you. And try to keep calm as stress can affect your levels too. XXXXX
