Vomiting during the night

New to the forum, so sorry if this has been discussed before - I frequently wake up to vomit in the middle of the night. No indication the day before that anything is wrong. I'm Type 2, age 67 and have blood sugar measurements between 5.0 and 10.0 normally so haven't needed to test ketones, but tested today anyway - was 1.2. This dropped to 0.1 about 6 hours later. Are Ketones to blame? Anyone else experiencing same - diabetic nurse was not very helpful. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum
How long has this been happening for as it it not something that should occur. Are you on any medication or managing your condition by diet only.
Could it be acid reflux which can happen when lying down as the acid from the stomach can rise into the oesophagus. Are you also getting stomach ache.
I think it would be wise to ask your GP as it is not something that would be a common effect.
What dietary regime are you following?

Thanks for reply - I am on several medications for heart failure including Forxiga which the diabetes nurse told me to stop taking for a while from today. I think my diet is OK but could be acid reflux I guess as I do belch a lot. The vomiting has been going on for 4 months on and off - in hospital last Nov where I was diagnosed with diabetes they also did an endoscopy and colonoscopy but nothing much wrong and docs blamed vomiting on the diabetes - I thought with blood sugar under control I would stop this but getting nowhere - making life pretty miserable.

Ketone levels rise during the night as we are fasting. It's fairly natural.

You could check the listed side effects of your various medications to see if vomiting is mentioned, It could be some interaction of the medications, your pharmacist should be able to check that.
If you are taking metformin then wind and stomach issues can be an effect of that.
I would not have thought diabetes as such should cause vomiting. Is it just at night? and every night. Can it be linked to any particular food. Do you have any other symptoms like stomach pain or dizziness or headache.

Thanks again - trouble is many drugs list vomiting as side effect - not taking metformin and no stomach pain or headaches just very tired all the time (probably due to heart failure) - I'll have to see GP if this carries on.

4 months is long enough for it to have been going on so I should definitely see you GP. They may be able to give you some anti sickness medication or if it is acid reflux something for that.

Sorry to hear about the vomiting you have been experiencing @Blue57

Ongoing vomiting like that is unusual, and should be investigated in my opinion. It’s not a routine part of living with diabetes, and levels generally between 5-10mmol/L suggests your diabetes is pretty well managed on the whole?

I’m glad you’ve stopped forxiga given the vomiting and ketones, though 1.2 is okay still and not high enough for DKA. Forxiga can cause DKA with normal bgs.
