Hello,

My name is Hodan Miyir, I am a MSc student at University of Wolverhampton. I am looking for volunteers with Diabetes to take part in a study that will compare the effect of a standard Diabetic Foot Education and Motivational Interviewing in influencing behaviour change. You will need to complete a short survey and, depending on the score, you will be invited to take part in a online interview via Microsoft Teams.

Please take some time to read the participant information sheet provided in the first page of the survey - link provided below.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email me on h.miyir@wlv.ac.uk or post your questions on the forum.

Thank you very much for your time.

standard Diabetic Foot Education and Motivational Interviewing in influencing behaviour change.
After starting year 56 on insulin I have never had a foot check up and what the heck is motivational interviewing? 🙂

Hi Pumper_Sue 🙂 Thank you for your question.

Motivational interviewing is a type of counselling method which encourages the person to highlight their own motivation for change, and encourages patient-involvement in their care and decision making. I have added a link to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) which gives a brief introduction to Motivational interviewing:
https://www.rcn.org.uk/clinical-topics/supporting-behaviour-change/motivational-interviewing

I am really glad you asked about what diabetic foot check is 🙂 Check out the link attached below, from Diabetes UK, which explains the importance of diabetic foot check. This should be along with your general diabetes health check and is sometimes done by GP, Practice Nurse, Diabetes Specialist Nurse, or Podiatrist (Clinician that specialist in foot health and foot care - also known as Chiropodist).

Kind regards
Hodan

Actually I didn't ask what a diabetic foot check is 🙂 I have no GP input or practice nurse input oh and I do not have a general diabetes health check and I don't want one either 🙂 It's my diabetes and I look after it thus it looks after me 🙂

My apologies, I misread your statement. That's great that you look after your diabetes 🙂

Hello @Hodan Miyir I have a real interest in Diabetic Foot Care as it affects me personally, I have
completed your questionnaire and thankyou for your interest, I hope you achieve your quest and if
I can help with that I am only too willing.

Kindest regards,

Ted

This has been approved. Please help if you can.

My foot checks (with the nurse) never involve taking off my shoes!

Hi Ted, thank you very much for your help and your time. The questionnaire is scored, so I will let you know the results via the email you provided. Once again, thank you.

Hi Lucy,

That's interesting. Sometimes if the person has no particular concerns the nurse might not request to take shoes off for a thorough assessment. Although it should be done and it's good clinical practice 🙂
It would be interesting to know your input in the survey, as the questions asked are from the diabetic education leaflet. I am curious to know how much information we retain from GP or Nurse consultation and implement into our everyday lives.

Kind regards
Hodan

@Lucyr I`m shocked you are checked with your shoes on how is that possible? T2`s are as much risk
as any other TD not good practice on the nurses check. Please ask the next time to have a full feet
health check, our feet are susceptible to infections we may not be aware of, its good to have a daily
check of our feet for peace of mind if nothing else, take care stay safe.

I’m autistic and not able to ask during the appointment. They always say do you have any problems. I say no, and they mark it down as pulses okay and feet checked etc.

Not good enough @Lucyr, take someone with you if practicable to ask what you wish to be done with your feet.
plenty of Podiatry leaflets about the care of your feet and the correct procedure for checking them by a DN.

If you are able to PM me I can send you the Podiatric information that will help you, believe me I don`t wish to
scare you but advise you on what you are entitled to being a Diabetic and it is important you learn about how to
care for your feet. I`m so sorry you are Autistic I have a friend with the same condition and also a T1D Louise she
is lovely and I helped her mum to get the proper care for her Diabetes especially her feet, stay safe.

Done

Having recently completed the survey and been interviewed by Hodan I can recommend it to anyone with an interest in improving information for future generations of diabetics. It doesn't take much time and also reminded me of how important it is to look after my feet 🙂

I apparently know too much about how to look after my tootsies to be eligible - trouble is, nobody gives you any really helpful info about how to reach them properly in order to treat them as well as you'd like to. I blench at 'toenails only needing cutting every 3 weeks'. 3 weeks maximum maybe OK, but you cannot ignore them meanwhile !! Some ignore em an awful lot longer than that according to podiatrists ...........which makes me heave.

Good evening all,

Thank you to all that have taken part in completing the survey and to those that were happy to participate in the interview, I truely appreciate your time and effort 🙂

The survey closes 13th June 2021 and it would be a great benefit to the research to have more participants, I am looking for 15 more people to complete the initial survey which takes around 5 minutes of your valuable time. Depending on your score, I would invite you to a short online interview with myself. The interview will run for 20-25 mins, focuses on 4 questions and is also guided by your survey results.

Although there is no obligation for you to take part in the 2nd stage which is the interview, your input would be invaluable to my study 🙂

Have a great week ahead.
Hodan
