Is it ok to take vitamin d tablets at 400 ims with metformin/saxagyptin?

As far as I know it is, no medical knowledge obviously - but is there anything on either of the Patient Information leaflets which suggests not?

Questions like this are bread and butter to pharmacists - if you are collecting anything from the pharmacy over the next few weeks you should ask them. 🙂

Good call on the pharmacist but, due to other medical issues I don’t go out and ringing will waste their time. Thanks for the reply though

The simple answer is yes, it is OK to take Vitamin D supplements with the medication you take, as long as you don’t exceed the recommended daily intake. That applies to everyone, of course. Mushrooms, particularly chestnut mushrooms, contain lots of vitamin D. And sit out in the sunshine - that’s what I do to replenish supplies.

I’m a retired doctor, but you for sure haven’t wasted my time. Welcome to the forum🙂

Brilliant news , thank you very much for your expert reply . I would love to sit outside but keep getting told by the police to go in lol

Fortunately, I have a private balcony for my sun soaking, while the ageing staff bring me cups of the tea and the mornings Guardian, assiduously ironed to kill viruses, and chilled Jelly Babies for the hypos. It’s a hard life, being retired.

(Mrs B can’t see what I’m typing, she’ll kill me if she does)

Very nice, your secrets safe with me, chilled jelly babies lessons to be learned here I think. Dreaming of retirement myself , enjoy your balcony sun, and hide the screen

Just a word of caution if you have high serum calcium it is not advised to take vit D supplements
Carol

Hi Carol
Thank you for the reply how would I know if this was the case for myself?? How do I find out if my serum calcium may be high?? What is normal?

rehards

You would be ill with a high calcium level - and the illnesses that can cause it. It can occur in cancer, and causes effects like kidney stones. It would have been detected in your blood tests for diabetes, so if I were you I wouldn’t worry about it. Your own body mechanisms govern the calcium level to maintain it at an ideal level.

And don’t go googling it, either. You’ll end up a gibbering paranoid wreck.

I have never thought if chilling my jelly babies!
Perhaps that is something to try whilst I have time now.

I was diagnosed with diabetes in2009 and my bloods came back with high serum calcium I did not feel ill but My GP was determined to find out why .h calcium was so high so I had loads of tests e.g. for parathyroid ,I had a 24hour urine test (a bit like staying home for the corona virus ! You can only go so far from a loo !) In the end it came back that I have familial hyper calcium something and calcisomethingelse !Sorry can't remember the exact name .I have no problems and it is just something I have probably had for a long time .
Carol
PS it came up in my bone profile

Hi @mikeyB I'm not doubting your knowledge, but I think members would appreciate you posting something to confirm what you are saying about high calcium levels

I get told to chill my beans. Is that like chilling your jelly babies?
