Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Has anyone else noticed the article in yesterdays Daily Mail about the lack of vitamin D potentially causing type 2 to develop.

Very interesting, it makes the point that a lack of sunshine has created a problem and that it is an extremely important issue. Suggesting that for some people dietary changes (to include vitamin d supplements) could prevent people developing type 2!

Thoughts?

Don't worry Barb, I have the power to move you - or rather, your posts :D

Vitamin D has been implicated for many years in development of diabetes of all types. There are lots of people on the web pushing Vit D supplements, but I think the best way of getting sufficient levels is spending some time in daylight (doesn't have to be particularly sunny!).

Around 90% of vitamin D intake comes from sunlight, with only 10% from food. For people with white skin, exposing hands & face to sunlight for around 15 minutes at midday is enough to keep topped up through the summer; during winter, you have to rely on stores bulit up during summer, as winter sun angles are too low.

Apparently....I have quite a severe vitamin d defiicieny - and even 2 weeks in Doha at 53 degrees hasn't corrected it. I am not sure what the consequences of this deficieny are though - I have to admit it went in one ear and out the other.🙂

I had no idea, how interesting. I definitely don't spend enough time outside, going to see that I do from now on.

Thanks Northy, lovely being 'moved' by you!

Dear copepod,

A more detailed explanation (from Wikipedia) is:

In the skin, 7-dehydrocholesterol, a derivative of cholesterol, is photolyzed by ultraviolet light (UVB) in a 6-electron conrotatory electrocyclic reaction. The product is previtamin D3. Which is another reason to be wary of the cholesterol lowering properties of statins 😱
