Vitamin D supplements could help to ease painful Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms, a new study from the University of Sheffield has found.

Scientists from the University's Department of Oncology and Metabolism reviewed and integrated all available research on vitamin D and IBS -- a condition which affects two in 10 people in the UK.

The study showed a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in IBS patients -- regardless of their ethnicity.

Doesn’t work the other way round, though. Loads of folk hereabouts are Vit D deficient, but don’t have IBS. I suspect this is just a statistical association of two common conditions.

You can’t get much sun exposure if you’re spending most of your time in the loo either! :D

I swear every condition mentions Vit D deficiency but I have to be honest and say treating it through GP prescription (not self medicating) has helped me. It is a serious issue for people with a genuine deficiency.

Have a serum calcium check before self medicating with vitamin D as it shouldn't be taken with high serum calcium

I bet if half of them were given creon it would sort i.b.s out. My missus tried it worked a treat. Couldn’t cope with side effects. Itching like crazy. But honestly helped the i.b.s. Out. Hate that Generic term if nothing is found it’s i.b.s.

There’s nothing wrong with diagnosis by exclusion, it’s a standard medical technique. Dr House does it all the time on the telly. With the gut, it’s important to exclude other potential diagnoses. Eliminate those, and the diagnosis is IBS. It’s too risky to diagnose it at first presentation.
