Relationship to Diabetes

Morning all

Anybody else struggle with their GP? Mine seems unable to differentiate between the diabetes and any other illness. I'm not often poorly but its as if to him everything that I might have wrong with me is all related to the diabetes and he therefore looks no further. For about 3 weeks or more I have 'almost' had a cold and the most awful cough and extreme tiredness. All my blood numbers seem normal and I'm taking all the prescribed tablets however he seems reluctant to look any further and his final comment was "I suppose it could be some sort of virus but we can't give you anything for that". Its as if the diabetes is his 'covers everythings, no need to look any further' policy. Actually I don't even know why I'm surprised, this is the same idiot which mis-diagnosed the charcot joint last year, caused me to be in plaster for almost a year and is the reason I now wear very special NHS black tie up shoes and trousers whatever the weather :(

It sounds like you could do with a new GP - although sometimes that isn't possible.

I haven't seen my GP in about a year and a half now. Getting an appointment with the GP for something like a virus is almost impossible so I use the NHS drop-in-centre instead!

There often isn't that much they can do for a virus (I usually get told to take paracetamol/ibuprofen and have warm drinks). Although he should of at least listened to your chest to see if you needed any antibiotics for a chest infection.

Doesn't sound like a great doc :( If the cough persists please go back & demand a proper check up, or at least a darn good explanation of why he thinks it's diabetes related & not something else. You could go on to the nhs direct symptom checker & see what that says too - I'm pretty sure the advice is if you have a persistent cough to get it checked. Good luck!

Just wondered if you take statins or any other meds that might be contributing to the coughing - especially if you've recently started taking them. Can you go and see a different GP at the same practice otherwise as this one does nothing to inspire confidence.
