For the past three years, Susan Kaminski's dog Barkley has been at her side around the clock, helping to save the diabetic's life on multiple occasions.
The yellow Labrador retriever was trained during the first two years of his life to alert his owner every time her blood sugar levels drop too low, something the dog can do without any prompting from a human.
"My husband used to travel a lot," Susan explained of their reasons for having Barkley trained. "And I don't feel my lows anymore. So I was getting in trouble."
Having Barkley by her side has made a world of difference.
"When we got Barkley, it changed both our lives, really," Susan's husband Ray Kaminski said.
Now, instinctively, Barkley can fetch Susan a soda, bring her the telephone and even go for help should the situation become drastic.
Then, about six months ago, Susan and Barkley's roles were suddenly reversed.
