Hi All,

Just wondered if any of you are on Victoza and if so how have you found it - any side effects such as sickness?

How long have you been on it and have you notice a change in weight in this time?

Thank you for sharing with me.

I'm not going to be much help. Been on Victoza for a couple of years now. No side efffects i'm glad to say and no weight change.

Hi Lucy i was on it but it didnt agree with me. I lost 8lbs in 2 weeks had burps that were rancid lol and felt sick all the time.

Hi Lucy,

Am hoping someone can help. I am asking on behalf of my aunt who is type 2 diabetic. how did you got prescribed victoza, as in did you have to ask your doctor? Or is it only available privately? It's just she seems like an ideal candidate to use it but when I mentioned it to her she had never heard of it so asked her doctor and they didn't seem to clued up on it either but going from my research victoza has alot of positive health benefits for type 2 diabetics.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Don't know what the current position is, but a couple of years ago it was only prescribed by a consultant, somehow my GP who specialised in diabetes put me on it. It is very expensive so there probably has to be very good reasons for prescribing it in preference to other treatments (inc insulin). Byetta is similar, as is Bydureon (although Bydureon is complicated to use). What health benefits do you see in Victoza?

Thank you for the reply, that makes sense if it's an expensive drug. I'd just done some reading regarding improved cholesterol and blood lipid levels, and as an alternative or combination with metformin, also my aunt would benefit from any possible weight loss as she isn't overly active.

2 pens are £78.48 and they last me 1 month.

OK that puts things into perspective cost wise thank you. do you think a low dose of 0.6mg could be beneficial to implement and reduce the amount of metformin required? or would it be a case of try it and see? Do you yourself see a benefit to be using it? As you are paying that much a month?

Type 2 Diabetics tend to be Insulin resistent and Metformin helps with this!

I view Victoza as a powerful addition to metformin, it got me off insulin. The point of it is to reduce blood sugar. I am not aware of any change to cholesterol or lipids. I thought most people on Victoza progress rapidly to 1.2mg dose.

Thank you again for the constructive reply. I need to read more on it regarding dosage used and will speak more to my aunt and maybe see if i can speak to her doctor more about it myself. I do think she would benefit as much from a better diet and more exercise but was impressed with what I had read on it and thought it could be help her. Thank you again.

My diabetic nurse at my GP surgery told me she can prescribe Victoza herself (she's a nurse prescriber) so I think it may vary depending on what part of the country you live in!

That's interesting to know, thank you, maybe it's a case of her doctor could/ would perscribe it if they think it's worth it both medically and financially for my aunt.

Why does she want to reduce the Metformin? - if she has unremitting wind, has she asked to change to the Slow Release version? And is she limiting her carbohydrates to try and combat this and help herself not gain weight?

And importantly - how are her blood glucose results, does she actually need any more help controlling them?

It was suggested to me that I might be a good candidate for Victoza by my diabetic nurse. Have been on it since the 26 Aug this year and have lost 5 kilos. My problem was that whatever I ate I was always hungry and consequently always had my head in the fridge looking for more. Victoza has put an end to that. It has worked well for me. I no longer think about snacking and since starting I have lost 5 kilos. I feel better for it and will keep going. At the beginning I was on 0.6mg a day. After a week went up to 1.20mg. I felt nauseous for the first few days at each level. This has now ceased. I have also reduced gliclazide from 160mg a day to 40mg. My BMI has come down and I'm hoping that at a short time in the future I may be able to reduce the metformin. My blood glucose levels have never been better. My only concern is that some day I will have to come off it and when that day comes will I start to feel hungry again and eat more or will the fact that I will then be used to smaller portions mean that I can then control my intake of food.

I've been on it around 4 or 5 years now and it does help with the insulin resistance, but after all this time it still makes me sick so I take Cyclizine to counteract the nausea. It hasn't helped with weight loss, but I have other issues which feed into that.

I suspect that by the time you do come off it your eating habits will have been transformed to the extent that you no longer feel the need to return to your 'old ways'. Although I am not on Victoza, but insulin, I found that my snacking decreased considerably after diagnosis because I could not be bothered to inject small amounts of extra insulin just so I could have a couple of biscuits or a packet of crisps - these days I have occasional snacks like an apple or some cheese, but don't miss the constant grazing I used to do! 😱 🙂

Well done on your weight loss and blood sugar improvements, it sounds to have worked really well for you - long may it continue! 🙂
