Hi 1972girl, welcome to the forum
🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and also that you have been left with little information. Have you been given a blood glucose meter so you can measure how different foods affect you?
A good place to start is by reading
Jennifer's Advice and
Maggie Davey's letter - these will give you a good grounding in understanding how to achieve good control. I would also suggest getting a copy of
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - highly recommended by many of our Type 2 members
🙂 Regarding diet, the advice just to not eat sugar is shameful! As you have gathered, all carbs will raise blood sugar levels, but some will raise it faster than others. To complicate matters, people can have different tolerances for the same food, so you need to determine what you personally can tolerate well - and this is where your blood sugar meter comes in, testing before and one or two hours after to see how much a particular meal raises your levels. It's a good idea to start a food diary also, so that you can get an idea of your overall carb consumption and look for areas where you might make substitutions or reduce portion sizes. Many people with diabetes follow the principles of the GL Diet - this is a method of combining foods so that they have a slow and steady release of energy. A good introduction is
The GL Diet for Dummies.
As you can see, your book collection is about to expand!
