Wow didn’t realise the were both so high in carbs. I only eat cereal so what are the ones that are ok. How many carbs can you have a day is it 130. Didn’t realise how complicated this all is.
130gm a day is the recommended MAXIMUM. Most of us go lower, some much lower - I personally aim for 90gm, which I decided on after experimenting to see which suited me best. I think 20gm porridge oats or oatbran, made up with something like 125ml unsweetened almond milk (virtually carb free) and water, and topped with 40gm frozen fruit would work out well. 20gm oatbran is 9.5gm carbs, and 20gm proper porridge oats (not the sweetened flavoured varieties) is 14.2gm carbs. 40gm blueberries is 3.6gm carbs. Perhaps someone will be able to suggest something else. When I was first diagnosed, it came as a shock to me how small a portion size is, and how high in carbs some things are. But on the positive side, once you adapt to smaller portions, the weight should come off! 🙂

I've posted pictures of some breakfasts I enjoy - all less than 20 carbs per serving. The bread is from a small wholemeal loaf, medium sliced at 9gm carbs per slice. I don't starve!

You can access some Diet Doctor recipes & the website online for free (or join & pay but I would hold off just yet). I think it's a keto diet which is very low carb so I would go with the "Carbs & Cals" at the moment.
Don't worry about asking lots of questions. We've all been there and are keen to help others as we were helped when we joined this forum. Good luck!

I just made a list of low carb fruit and veges - there are quite a few under 5 percent carbs, and I used to have two shopping lists which I used alternately so that there was variation each week.
Basically the meat or fish is the starting point for a meal and then I add various options, whatever I feel like on the day.

I’ve just today started 3 a day on Metformin and over the last week or so have had blurry vision and headaches is that normal and does it go.

I’ve just today started 3 a day on Metformin and over the last week or so have had blurry vision and headaches is that normal and does it go.
The more common side effects of metformin include:

  • heartburn
  • stomach pain
  • nausea or vomiting
  • bloating
  • gas
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • weight loss
  • headache
  • unpleasant metallic taste in mouth
Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are some of the most common side effects people have when they first start taking metformin. These problems usually go away over time. You can reduce these effects by taking metformin with a meal. Also, to help lessen your risk of severe diarrhea, your doctor will likely start you on a low dosage of metformin and then increase it slowly.

Hope this helps

The blurry vision could be connected to changes in your BG levels?

If you levels have been high for a while, then begin to move towards a more healthy range, the pressures can change in your eyeballs and cause blurry vision.

If that’s the case, it should settle down in a few weeks or so?

Oh ok I’ve only been diagnosed for three weeks. What’s bg levels
blood glucose
There will be lots of strange terminology that will be bandied about but there should be some explanation if you look at the learning zone as I think there is a glossary of terms.

I can honestly say I’ve felt completely rubbish today with blurry vision, headache and queezy hopefully will go soon.

If you have gone straight onto 3 metformin a day that could be the reason, usually people are started gradually. Hopefully it will settle. They suggest taking with food which can be hard if you are feeling queasy and don't want to eat much.

No I’ve been taking it gradually now on 3 a day from yesterday and yes always take it with food. Hopefully it will go soon. Strange I’m on lots of different medications and never had side effects.

How long ago did you start taking Metformin

I was told to increase the dose to 2 after a month - and to three after another month, if tolerated.
They weren't, but it was definitely a month between altering the dosage. Perhaps there is an error?

Definitely says on the box 1 for first week 2 next week 3 next week. I have to go back in 3 months
