I saw the Crocs? medical Rx Ultimate Cloud Navy clogs on the Diabetes.org.uk website, but I noticed that the price at ?59.99 includes VAT.

I was surprised that there was no information about claiming VAT exemption [Group 14 of the Zero Rate Schedule to the Value Added Tax Act 1983] I have emailed Diabetes UK Services Ltd, no reply as yet.

Can anyone shed light on this, as I saw them on another website as being VAT exempt.

I would imagine you have to pay VAT unless you need them as part of your job or maybe if a consultant said they were therapeutic.

Other than that, they would be seen as a luxury I should think.

The reason I suspect is that not everyone would wear them for medical reasons, thus they pay VAT. If you are entitled to VAT exemption then just ask for the form to sign. 🙂

They are quoted on the crocs website as "The CrocsRx? Ultimate Cloud is the newest member of our diabetic footwear line" in particular providing extra protection for the toe box and heel cup. Whilst they can be worn by anyone and his/her brother, they are designed for diabetics.

Well there you go then.
The reason VAT is included is because anyone can wear them. 🙂

But I claimed VAT off my blood pressure monitor and anyone can use those too - where/how do they draw the line?

If you have a medical condition that warrants the use of said article then you can claim the VAT back.
I doubt anyone would get VAT back for being addicted to cigs though :D

LOL at Sue - or indeed the medicinal glass of red wine - but those both attract 'Duty' - NOT VAT !

(I mean they probably do attract VAT I suppose, but the main ingredient of the price, is 'Duty'.)

A bit like someone designing a bag specifically for carrying our supplies. We don't need it but it is specifically for our use. Vat payable because we don't need it.

Syringes, test strips, needles, etc all needed so vat free.

We used to get entitlement to cotton wool and surgical spirit on prescription. Then they decided we don't need it so I doubt that would be even vat free now.

VAT oddities

We used to buy food for our guinea pigs from a pet shop, but the owner told us to buy the same food for our (imaginary) "rabbits" as food for rabbits was VAT free, as they can be eaten. UK Customs & Excise (as it was then) obviously hadn't taken account of fact that guinea pigs are eaten in Andean regions and that most people don't eat their pets!
