Relationship to Diabetes

I had to see my GP urgently this morning due to a UTI. I've had these before but i asked my GP if they are more prone in diabetics and she said yes. This one is particularly bad as I actually had visible blood in my urine which i've never had before (the last one was from 2 years ago according to her records). I am now on antibiotics and drinking lots of water. Why are 'we' as diabetics more prone to these and what can we do to prevent them?

I believe we are more prone to them if our blood sugar levels are higher than normal as this can encourage bacteria to grow and multiply, making it harder for our immune systems to destroy them.

Hope you are fully recovered very soon! 🙂

Cranberry juice is meant to help 🙂 I had what you're decribing once, the amount of blood terrified me but it cleared up quickly with antibiotics. That was the last I had of UTIs until a couple of years later when I had a very persistent one that actually put me in hospital, vomiting and with stabbing stomach pains. I haven't found it to be related to high sugars, a lot of my non-diabetic friends have had more trouble with UTIs than me, but I guess it depends on the individual. My doctor told me that people who tend to over-wash down there are more prone to them, or if you've just gotten a new sexual partner.

All the girls in my family are affected by UTIs from an early age. I can remember my Mum sitting me in a warm bath when I was about 4, making me drink camomile tea. I did the same for my daughter, and she now does it for my granddaughter.

Cranberry juice does work - as a diabetic I go for the 'light' version. It does contain some sugar, but less than the standard stuff. I dilute it 50/50 with water. You can also get cranberry capsules, and if you take them every day you may be able to reduce the recurrence.

I hope yours clears up quickly.

Thanks for the advice peeps. As soon as I took a couple of antibiotics, the stinging eased and the bleeding stopped so i'm guessing they are working and i'm trying to drink more water and i'll take the advice to drink the cranberry juice (diluted). UTI's are nasty and very painful and discomforting. If I'm prone to them, then i'm going to have to see if i can prevent them in the future by drinking more water (with or without cranberry juice) and look at the possibility of taking cranberry capsules but they are so expensive. Thanks anyway, I certainly feel a lot better today than i did yesterday morning 🙂
