Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm sorry if this offends anyone but I'm just looking for advice. I seem to be constantly getting uti s I 've been taking the powders but last week it was bad so called the doc and I put a sample in and they gave me antibiotics for 3 days I finished them on Saturday. But yesterday the symptoms are back I'm going to phone the docs Tom but is this common I was diagnosed in March 2017. Thanks

If a person's blood sugar's are raised over weeks, this can cause things like that. Only treatment I know of is cranberry juice (low sugar version). Cranberry juice has been a traditional treatment for hundreds of years.

What are "the powders" you mention? Your GP may want to prescribe a course of antibiotics longer than 3 days. You could also enquire about foods you can eat / drink eg cranberry juice, dissolvable vitamin C tablets etc.

If your always suffering , you could ask your GP to be referred
to see a specialist nurse , they will give you tips about foods and drinks and
ways on how to make sure you fully empty your bladder , i used to suffer
from UTI'S terribly , but touch wood , not had one in over two year

I wonder if it was cystitis powders you were taking Shirley? Diabetics are more prone to UTI's especially if levels are a bit high but there could be other reasons for recurring UTI type symptoms which need investigating. There is a condition called interstitial cystitis and it's explained here. I'm not suggesting it's what you have but it's worth mentioning to your GP if other things are not helping and it's a constant, recurring problem;

Also certain diabetes medications can put you at higher risk of UTI's, these fall in the SGLT2 type of medications, things like Empagliflozin, as they make you pee out the excess glucose. I make sure I drink plenty of water as I am on Empagliflozin to keep my kidneys well flushed through.

Hi they are over the counter cystitis sachets. I'm feeling better today so cross my fingers that's it gone away but if it comes back I 'll go to the docs. The doctor did say that my urine sample had a high amount of white blood cells.

Hi, I'm new here.
Been type2 for 15 years and am on maximum metformin. Today I was prescribed this fairly newish drug Empaglifloxin to take.
I have been searching the internet and now I am a bit scared to take it.
They mention side effects, anything from drinking and weeing (which will be easy to put up with) to heart failure and bad hypo's.
Any advice will be welcomed. Thank you

As this is an old thread which probably not be appropriate for your question perhaps you could start and new post in a new thread

I never had Empaglifloxin, but with any med there are always side effects with some of the side effects they list are very rare but hey do have to say what the possible ones are.

As for meds that cause hypos they can vary from minor to a more severe hypo, once you are taking hypo causing meds you GP or nurse shoul;d of given you a meter (ask for 2) and put test strips on your repeat prescription espec if you drive as DVLA guide lines state you test before driving and every 2 while driving.

Ideally test before eating and two hours after and if you feel funny as you will learn what your hypo signs are. For me a mild hypo can be worse to treat that a bad one. I always have two meters one on me and a main one in the house and always carry hypo treats like jelly babies so if anything happens you have something to hand.

By testing before eating and 2 hours after you can build up a pattern of what foods do to you and how they effect your levels. If you were not given a meter I would go back to your Gp practice and ask for one and to have test strips added to your repeat. Some GP's will allow you to get your own meter though this is getting rarer and then provide strips for it. Most of the big names in meters will give you one free as they make money from the strip.

If you have recently had antibiotics you will have knocked out your natural defences, and in all people it is quite common to get a repeat UTI.
