Hi all.

So after feeling pretty c**p the past few days, I have went to gp yesterday and he said I have a urine infection. He has given me a 3 day course of Trimethoprim. This comes on the heels of my diagnosis 3 weeks ago.

Anyway today I had a banging headache, woke up with sugar at 4 exactly, but they have been steady the rest of the day. I feel shaky, nauseous and just pretty rough. I am drinking plenty water to try flush it out. Is it normal for a UTI to affect me this way? I am completely worried about it spreading to my kidneys and having to go into hospital. If anyone has any thoughts/advice it would be much appreciated. I contacted my DSN this morning and she said to keep doing what I was doing, keep an eye on my sugars and drink plenty water. I feel pretty c**p.

Thanks.

Oh Lizzy, sorry you are feeling c**p. What you are doing e.g. lots of water is the way to go, blood sugars at 4 is near the knuckle if you are not feeling well. Hopefully it will not prolong itself but don`t put up with it, Doctor rather than DSN for advice. Take care.

UTI's are nasty - hopefully given a day or so you will feel much better as the antibiotics kick in. Yeah, I've had everything you had, but also a high temperature and feeling not 100% with it. So all sounds normal.

Lots of water is definitely a good plan.

Thanks Karnak. My sugars have been ok and have been keeping levels up with bits of banana or toast. I'm feeling pretty rubbish and just hope it clears soon.

Thanks Mark. The doc has given me a 3 day course and not sure if that is going to be long enough to clear it up. Most antibiotic courses I have had have been 5 days at least. I'm trying not to Google too much aswell.

Some ABs lower the BG - ISTR Amoxycillin is almost guaranteed to do this. Why I comment is because normally when we have an infection our BG goes up not down so I'm a bit surprised how low your BG was first thing in the morning. Your body won't be used to being 'that normal' recently, will it? - so that can make you feel shaky.

Test even more than you have been recently and keep a log of what it's doing - but you should be feeling a bit better from the UTI soon, although it will take more than a couple of days to actually recover from it properly.

Hi TW

No that's the lowest reading I have had in the morning. Although last night my levels were a wee bit down too, so will see what they are tonight and maybe try get them at the higher end of the scale before I sleep. The DSN explained that it may be a combination of the UTi, the antibiotic, and the false hypo feeling.

I have hardly ever had to take an antibiotic, but in the space of 3 weeks now diagnosed with T1 and ended up sick on top of it. I will continue to drink water and keep an eye on my sugars.

Well it could be the T1 Lizzy, but more the effect it had on your body before it was diagnosed, rather than it happening because it was! Even though T1 is more rapid in it's onset than T2 - it still takes time to do it. I mean it wasn't till quite a while after being diagnosed, that when I really considered it once I'd settled down a bit - I hadn't been A1 for a couple of months, maybe a bit longer, prior to actually going to the docs and - very quickly thanks to that GP - getting to hospital and getting sorted.

Higher than normal BG DOES affect the body's ability to fight any germs, viruses or whatever's floating about wherever we happen to be. Hence longer than normal healing for just simple cuts or whatever - all scientifically proved and known by the medical profession. Plus known only too flippin well by diabetics of all types as they live with D over months and years. Like old age - D doesn't come on its own, mate! However if we can maintain good control while we're doing it - we can and do heal pretty well. That is exactly why our Medical Exemption from prescription charges applies to treatment for anything we might get as well as the treatments for our diabetes.

Give yourself time!

Yeah you are right, my sugars had obviously been high for several months there, bound to take its toll.

And probably there was sugar in your urine, which is presumably not good for UTIs. (Not good for minimising them, anyway.) So that, at least, should be something that won't happen again (or rarely).

Yeah I didn't even think about that Bruce. The gp did say that bacteria can feast on the sugar in the urine. I'm certainly hoping they don't become a regular occurrence, as I felt pretty awful yesterday. Felt a bit better today and keeping an eye on my sugars, as they seem to be running lower, even though it's more common for anti biotic and infection to raise blood sugars. All very confusing.

It’s not likely to affect your kidneys if you are flushing everything through with plenty of fluids, Lizzy, so don’t worry to much about that. A three day course is standard for a simple UTI, though one might consider diabetes as not making it simple. I’m sure you’ll be fine, though.

Thanks Mikey. Have been drinking plenty so hopefully that'll help.

Have to say i have had urine infections many moons ago, and can't remember it flooring me like that. Felt terrible yesterday. I think may be with waking with a blood sugar of 4 that may have contributed aswell. It was 4.4 this morning but I dropped a unit of my levemir last night. I might do that until I finish the anti biotic tomorrow and speak to my DSN about my levemir dose at night, as I seem to be waking up to levels between 4-5. I drive first thing in the morning so I would like to have them in the early 5's. (Easier said than done ehh)
