Hi all,

OH still in bed after a bad night, he was sick and had to sit on the loo for ages with chronic stomach ache
He is on glucophage and gliclazide plus a statin - he is not overweight
Last night for dinner he had 2 x pure beef quarterpounders, butchers ones, no addded cereal
1/2 a wholemela roll, about 8 chips, frozen oven ones and salad, plus a glass of red wine
followed by some ice-cream - his bloods were on his normal spectrum before bed
Any comments welcomed - was it too much meat? He says it's food poisoning but I'm fine!

Hi Chrissie.
Over what period of time did your OH consume this, maybe its a case of he aint a little to much in a short space of time, from what you describe he ate maybe its the ice cream I find if I have anything like for example the other week I had 2 scoops of cookie dough ice cream i regretted it later that evening for sure.Sounds like he had a terrible night I hope he feels better soon

It could just possibly the be the Glucophage ( also known as Metformin), or it could be a straightforward tummy bug.

We started eating at about 8.30 but before that he'd had diet coke and cheese straws! Which I forgot about. He has this ice-cream most days, I think it's either Lidl or Morrisons cheap one it's not too high in sugar, he's still in bed asleep atm

Well, he keeps getting upset stomachs theres no rhyme nor reason to it - that's why the Dr. took him off normal Metrformin and put him on the slow release one - I know it's a learning curve but it's been going on since December and I don't want to sound selfish but as I'm the main food provider I need help and advice. The diabetic course is available for the end of August, it's going to be a long struggle I fear!

People still get it on the slow release, has he reduced his Carbohydrate intake some say that helps reduce the upset stomachs . Why not discuss again with Doctor!

Ok. Not sure if he cheese straws would of caused it although they look like plastic not sure they taste of it never tried .it must be difficult even us as the diabetic sometimes don't know what we are supposed to eat and avoid must be hard for you being the one who has to do food shop . Can't he go around with you ? How long has he been diagnosed? Does he eat a lot of carbs

Getting an appointment is a nightmare, he's been downgraded to a nurse, once a month, I was wondering if anyone else gets the same sort of symptoms.
We have cut carbs a lot but not cut out totally as it's not really doable, he needs loads of calories for his activity, a lot of cereals make him sick so breakfast is a nightmare too, plus he's allergic to eggs!

Does the nurse prescribe or has she to refer to the Doctor? Can you get an appointment to see her and see it is not acceptable to him what are the options.

Hi Chrissie,
How about kippers for breakfast?

Most cheese straws I've had taste like breadsticks which have had a chunk of not-very-strong cheese waved in their general direction. 🙄 If i made cheese straws/scones. I used the most powerful Cheddar I could find, and plenty of it...

To get back to the topic of this thread, I have coincidentally been suffering a bad tummy upset since last Tuesday. :( So I can sympathise, although I don't have any advice other than painkillers (and loperamide if the runs get too bad)...

Hi Steph, we do go shopping together, he bought the cheese straws to make a change from peanuts and when you look at the sugar content theyre quite low, I gave him 2 x quarterpounders to make up for the lack of carbs (he used to have 2 rolls and loads of chips now down to 1/2 wholemeal roll) so I really don't know, someone else I know has an OH with type 2 who gets the same, upset stomach about once a fortnight on average - ps he's still in ed, the sun is shining, there's loads of gardening to do, it's driving me nuts!
