I’m due to start sitagliptin and am scared
I have only head of pancreas due to resection and am worried about using sitagliptin, been advised low chance it may cause pancreatitis
Googling sitagliptin it says other countries stopped prescribing sitagliptin due to pancreatic, heart and kidney issues and acute issues caused by sitagliptin can be fatal after even first use
HELP anyone got any experience of using sitagliptin who can reassure me

What medication have you been taking up to now?
People who have diabetes due to issues with the pancreas as in your case would usually be Type 3c and treated as Type 1. Are you under your GP or hospital clinic

I've been taking Sitagliptin for 18 months now, with no issues or side effects at all. However if my next HbA1c is still good, I may have a think about stopping but not because it causes me problems, just because it's one less tablet to take 😉

It does seem odd that you have been given the label / treatment options of Type 2, when your pancreatic surgery suggests Type 3c?

Does your GP practice have an in-house Pharmacist? Or is there a larger chemists near you where you could go and chat with the qualified Pharmacist? They are good sources of information about drug interaction, suitability, and contra-indications, and may be able to put your mind at rest?

After years of diet managed. I had a year of extreme stress loss of family etc. Drs tried various tablets including the one you ask about but they creased me. Was only then specialist diabetic nurse said pancreas tired. That tablets irritating it so she stopped them. So tried insulin which has been fine. Are you under specialist diabetes team.

Saw a specialist diabetic doctor in diabetes clinic says I’m not even diabetic enough to be under them my readings are too well controlled So I give up
3c treated at type 2 so labels don’t count
GP treat me as type 2
I was on Metformin and dapagfokizin can’t spell had to stop both due to side effects

It was GP pharmacist who told me that there’s a slight chance of pancreatitis so I wanted advice from others as I find real experiences form diabetics good

Just my experience but do keep an eye on any changes ......................
Type 2 diabetis. I was on metformin for 3 years, suffered badly with diarrhea so doctor changed me to Sitagliptin with small dose of metformin. 3 weeks later hubby had to take me to A&E with severe stomach pains spreading to back, so bad I was on the verge of fainting with the pain. Was in there 10 hours, had scans, xrays etc & all they found was a small chest infection probably from a bout of Covid I'd had 2 months earlier. The excruciating pains went but was replaced by a nagging pain which was worse depending on what I ate & drunk (I don't drink alcohol!) I could only eat small portions & often felt nauseas, I also became very tired but just put this down to my meds & diabetes. 2 months later the pains were a lot worse, saw doctor & he has arranged scans (3 week wait). My own investigating online shows I have all the signs of pancreatitis, blood test results seem to confirm this (looked at by a friend who is a medical Bio Scientist working for NHS in cancer screening) Remembered reading something about pancreatitis in the leaflet with Sitagliptin so got it out & re-read. It say - in the huge list of side effects - may cause pancreatitis !!! Tried to contact Diabetic nurse for advice but no reply after 2 days so I decided to stop taking Sitagliptin straight away and went back onto just metformin, the same dose as I'd been on before. Been following a liquid only diet , no fats & limited sugar for the last 10 days & pains seem to be improving. Starting to introduce small amounts of low fat & sugar normal foods in the last couple of days and so far all is well so hopefully that will have been the problem. I'm just hoping that this pancreatitis episode was a one off & won't be repetitive. and the scans don't reveal anything else. Diabetic nurse agrees it was probably the Sitagliptin and has now marked in my records that I’m allergic to it!
