Hi again everyone, quick update, I'm one month in from being told my HbA1c was 109 and joining this forum feeling pretty desperate. Had telephone appt with my DN yesterday and when I read her my last 3 days BS readings which were all 7.5 or below she was amazed the numbers had dropped so quickly, the highest was 14 when I saw her. Finding low carb way of eating really suits me the biggest shock is no cravings or starving hungry all the time, its like a miracle. Quick question my morning fasting blood sugars are 6 at lowest, any tips for getting that number down a bit? I just take 500mg metformin twice a day as nurse said no need to take glyclazide. A big thank you to everyone who helped me as couldn't have done it without you. Feel so much better in myself eating low carb, loads more energy.

Morning fasting numbers are often the last to come down but some people will experience higher morning numbers due to Foot on the floor Syndrome and testing whilst still in bed will show a lower reading than when people have got up and been to the bathroom, made a cup of tea, had a shower etc. as the liver releases glucose to give you energy to do all those things and hunt for breakfast. A fasting level of 6 mmol/l is pretty good.

Thanks. Can't figure out why some mornings it's 7.5 when I stop eating after 8pm and have a low carb dinner. I get the foot on the floor thing now thanks to you and other forum members so will do BS first thing. Hopefully I will become a bit more relaxed about having diabetes as time goes on but for now my whole focus seems to be on getting my numbers down for next HB1Ac end of Feb. Diabetes diagnosis uppermost in my brain and I really don't want it to be!

Hi Drakey, good to hear you're still doing well, and that your diabetic nurse is also pleased.

Leadinglights got in first and said it much better that I was going to!

Can you do an experiment tomorrow and take two readings, one in bed, and one after you've got up and put the kettle on?

They might be the same, or they might not. A fasting level of 6, like Leadinglights says, is good. As you continue with your low carb diet, it may improve as you have already from your reading of 14. Normal BG levels are 4-7, so you're not far off the middle of the range. Keep going!
Sarah

The BG level isn't just based on the glucose in your blood that's from food. The liver stores fat and glycogen (I think?) and acts like a battery to get you moving by letting out glucose when you wake up.
