Type 2
I have an ileostomy following bowel cancer operations in 2012 since then I have had difficulty regaining the weight I lost. Some 7 months ago I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes. My problem is I cannot afford to lose any more weight so.how do I maintain my weight while still trying to keep my T2 under control.

Are you on any medication for your diabetes @Dave2378 ? Do you know what your last HbA1c blood test result was?

Do you have a list of foods that work for you in regards to the ileostomy? That would be good as people could then suggest which of those might also work for your diabetes and to gain weight.

I am taking Glilazide 80mg 20 mins before the evening meal.
I don't know the actual result of the blood test, apart from Drs. Comment it had gone through the roof.
Food-wise I am fortunate that I can eat most things, although I do limit myself to medium-hot curries and chillies.

Are you taking in enough calories . With T2 it’s carbohydrates we don’t handle too well anymore, we are usually fine with protein and good fats.
To stop weight loss We often recommend eating more good fats as it’s more calorific but I have no idea if this is good advise for you .

How did you come to be diagnosed with T2, is as your doc said your Hb1ac is through the roof I am wondering if T2 might be the wrong dx

To be honest I don't know if I am taking in enough calories I'm following what advice I can find in regards of things to cut out I.e sugar etc and the guidance on portion control. However, most guidence appears to be directed at losing weight rather than gaining.
The diagnosis came following a general blood test following an annual check from that, they took a specific blood/sugar blood test. It's a bit concerning if they have the diagnosis wrong, not sure what I should do about that. Maybe ask for another test do you think?

Were you losing weight without trying before your diabetes diagosis and did you have any other symptoms .
Don’t worry about what type you are atm, ok as they still may be right.

Yes with T2 it is assumed they all need to lose weight, so the dietary advise is aimed towards weight loss.
Increase your potion sizes to increase your calorie intake, unless it contra indicated go for full fat options rather than low fat options ,

When I had to gain weight I ate lots of eggs, cheese, cold meats like salami etc, nuts would help too
xx

Before my op I was 13stone which for my height 6’.2” was about right. Directly after op fell to 10’ 7”. After about 2 years managed to put on a stone and up to being told about T2 had maintained that weight. However, since following T2 guidance have lost 8lbs in 7 months.

I would be quite happy doing the same as I would enjoy all three. Perhaps I'm getting a bit hung up on the portion control advice

I too noticed a lot of diet advice is focused around weight loss.
When I was diagnosed, I had lost weight and needed to regain it but everything I was given was about reducing portion sizes and limiting calories.
As others have said, this is not necessary if you are not overweight.

Yes, it’s frustrating when all the healthy eating advice assumes everyone needs to lose weight. @Dave2378 Do you have access to a dietician by phone? Perhaps they could confirm what’s ‘safe’ for your ileostomy and then you could go from there.

If it’s ok for you, try things like oily fish, avocados, cheese, nut butters (not sure if these would be ok for you?) etc.

If you’re on gliclazide, are you testing your blood sugar at home? It would be sensible to do so.

Thank you. I think have been taken the portion advice to literally and not done myself any favours.

When I first was given the diagnosis I asked for a referral to a dietician but so far not heard anything, all down to the current the situation I guess. Apart from the avocados have included above in my diet and are ok I think I will increase the portion size in future.
Yes I am testing blood sugar at home as and when, averaging 6 reading after meals. How often is it advisable to test?

6 is a good reading for after meals 🙂 I’m Type 1 so I’m not sure how often you should test as a Type 2 on gliclazide. Hopefully someone who does know will comment here but if not you could start another thread specifically asking that question.

It sounds like increasing portion sizes could help you. You could try that for a couple of months or so, then see if it’s worked. That would hopefully also fit in with less pressure on the NHS. The diet advice is very general and we all need to find the balance that works for us as individuals. Go slowly and carefully, and hopefully you’ll find a way of eating that works for you. I’d write a food diary and then see where I could increase portions safely and add calories. Change a little at a time and that way you can keep an eye on any effect on your blood sugar.
