Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, everybody. I would very much appreciate if I could get some help (advice, experience, information) from you.
I am 36 years old and I was diagnosed 2 years ago (based on the HbA1c of 7.6% ) initially with Type 2 insulin necessary (the pills I tried made me very sick and vomiting) so I was put on Lantus, very small units, 6-8 units/ once a day. I had often episodes of hypoglycemia and never exceeded the sugar level of 10.5 mmol/l. I did GAD and ICA antibodies and they were negative. After 2 years , I moved in UK and repeated the analysis: Cpeptide -519 pmol/l (july 2017), the antibodies: GAD -negative, but Islet Cell Antibody was found weakly positive, so the endocrinologist said it might be type 1. My doctor suggested to stop insulin and check Cpeptide in 2 weeks, the result was: 779 pmol/l (sept 2017)and then, tested again in another 2 weeks without insulin, the result of cpeptide: 631pmol/l. (oct 2017). The doctor said it might be LADA, I was tested for the specific antibodies. The results are ready, but they don't want to give me my results . I was so anxious to get a diagnose , especially that for 3 weeks I am feeling sick, I am yellow under my eyes and I have a severe stomach ache . I got then a letter from my doctor saying the following: "We will diagnose your diabetes as:uncertain type of diabetes " again. We will try to stop insulin again. Your GP needs to prescribe Sitagliptin 100mg once a day. " I am so upset and I think I am in depression too....I ...I just don't get it....what do I need to do to clarify my health issue? How can i get a diagnose? Did anyone experienced the same thing as I ?

What are your bg like ? 2hrs after meals etc. T1 your pancreas does not work but T2 it could work x %. I would keep off the carbs & good luck finding out but does it make any difference to your health ? I would look at in a different way if I where you. Welcome 🙂

I don't know what my bg are because my endocrinologist told me to measure only my bg before meals. Yes, psychologically it makes a difference. How would you feel not knowing what type of diabetes you have? And maybe now it looks like it doesn't really matter, but in years from now, the quality of my life would be different with type 2 instead of making around 4 shots /day...right? Than you for your answer.

The Types are treated differently. So I can understand your need to know.

Hi Nataly, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about all the uncertainty in getting you a positive diagnosis :( Unfortunately, it can be this way sometimes. Your pancreas is still producing some insulin, but in insufficient quantities to keep your levels under good control. I'm really not sure about the symptoms you describe though - the sickness and yellow eyes, it may be that they are related to the anxiety you are feeling. It's not unusual for some people to be in a situation where the type of diabetes is difficult to pin down initially - LADA is very similar to Type 2 in a lot of people initially and I understand that the tests are not always conclusive.

I appreciate your distress at not having a definite diagnosis of one type or another, but the main consideration is not the name given to your condition, but whether you can get an appropriate treatment which works well for you. So try not to let the name dominate your thoughts - try the medication they are suggesting and you may find it works very well for you. It's likely that things will become clearer as time progresses. Do let them know how you have been feeling, and give the medication a try.

Thank you for your answers. Grovesy, I really needed a kind word, thank you for understanding me. Northerner, I suggested them to do genetics tests, maybe it's Mody type, but I guess it's easier for them to test me ...well, I am not sure it's a good idea to return to pillo find s when I saw the benefits with insulin. And again, I was patient 2 years to find out the diagnosis, this consumed my time, money and effort. I am tired and I need an answer..

Have you tried to discuss this with your GP?

Yes, my GP agreed it's not a really good idea to stop insulin and try this medicine and booked me an appointment for a diabetic doctor to consult with him as well. I was very curious if someone else had this unknown diabetes diagnose as I did ....for such a long time.
