A TEST FOR LIFE: Victoria University nurse Catherine Nelson, the only dedicated diabetes nurse on a New Zealand university campus, runs diabetic student Jared Dellow through the tests.

Jared Dellow was on a family holiday when his mother noticed he was getting a little gaunt and urinating with unusual frequency.

"I was getting quite skinny and peeing a lot."

When the then 16-year-old returned home, he went to hospital and was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes, meaning he will need regular insulin injections for the rest of his life.

"It didn't really sink in till the morning after, then it was quite upsetting. This is something forever."

Dellow is now 20 and in his second year at Victoria University, navigating living independently for the first time while keeping an eye on his insulin levels.
