I like to know when my next HbA1c test will be. I try hard all the while to get the best control I can yet I still feel I should try that bit harder in the weeks leading up to my HbA1c.

I had it in my head that my next HbA1c would be towards the end of April but today got a phone call requesting that I have an HbA1c in the next few days for an upcoming diabetes complications related clinic. Nooo! Do the NHS not realise what panic this instills in me even after all these years. I'm confident the result will be fine but I still beat myself up about HbA1c results and the emphasis that is put on that number.

I'm pretty sure the result will be that oh so encouraging 'satisfactory' but please don't mess with my diabetes mojo and request tests out of the blue!

I'm not alone in feeling like this am I ?

I can confirm that you are not alone in this @Flower - the same happened to me at the beginning of the year! Was expecting it in March and they threw a January one at me! 😱 It's sneaky :( 😉

Phew! thanks Northerner.🙂 It is indeed very sneaky and unnerving. I was beginning to think I was over reacting but good to hear I'm not on my own! 🙂

I absolutely get this flower. I like to at least feel I’m making extra efforts towards it so throwing a test in without warning is a no-no! Eek! 😱

Oh me too, I even get unnerved when I go to make my blood-letting appointment ( normally at least a week's wait) and the receptionist says 'Oh we've got a cancellation, come in tomorrow!'

LOL - we aren't supposed to NEED to make an extra effort though are we, in truth? (and though I always think I'd better - well, the road to hell is paved with good intentions isn't It!)

However, not panic I don't think - just an Oh bugger! from me!

Oh @Flower - That's so annoying!

If it's any consolation, I had my annual HbA1c in November, but my GP asked for a raft of bloods on Tuesday, and threw in an extra HbA1c. It was interesting to have it sprung on me. I'm usually very "it'll be what it'll be", but this time I was a bit nervy.

In reality, it turned out to be my best HbA1c ever, so for me, maybe it's the way forward. Yes, my tongue was buried deeply in my cheek when I typed that.

Fingers crossed for you..

No Flower you are not alone. Its happened to me too and is very unnerving. Good luck and all the best for a positive result. You take care now x

Hold on! You don't think this is a new policy, do you? To spring tests on us at random times in order to see if we only act 'responsibly' in the lead up to when we presume we are going to be tested? 😱 That really would be sneaky! 😱 😉 But the evidence is mounting that this is no 'one-off' and that they are not just picking on @Flower! 😱 🙂

Am I being cynical? Are they trying to reach targets? Maybe a lot of people don't bother going and the surgery has to recall people earlier to meet the magic number?

Well, mine isn't 'due' until October as I got 12 months grace, but I don't know if I have to book it or if it will be done automatically. No one said.

When I switched to Levemir last autumn, my nurse told me to arrange an HbA1c for three months, so we could check it was working. I realised this would be end of January, and so would include the Christmas excesses, so I 'accidentally' didn't get round to organising it til end of Feb!
