A trip to the hospital isn’t often a welcome one.

But countless lives are saved every week on Teesside by tireless doctors, nurses and specialists.

And behind them is a small army ensuring the whole operation doesn’t grind to a halt.

No fewer than 80 porters work at University Hospital of North Tees - working on shift 24/7, 365 days a year to fetch and carry vital equipment while keeping patients chipper.

A modest office is North Tees “porter HQ” where Hardwick’s James Priestley offers up a brew.

The 34-year-old has worked at the hospital for 10 years and has held almost every portering job going.

Now he mans a walkie-talkie as supervisor - giving out jobs to the team of six staff on shift as and when they come in.
