Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Changed my doctor (Not diabetic doctor) about 2 years ago as i was moving and needed one nearer.

Had informed him numerous times that i am a diabetic as i was getting prescriptions for the pill, flu injection, antibiotics etc.

Rang looking for a note from him for my dentist to say im Type 1 and he said he had no recollection of me being a diabetic.

just so mad that the doctor had no paper work or had it on PC of me being diabetic. i mean some of the antibiotics prescribed may not have been suitable.

I had to send in one of my letters i had from the diabetic clinic to "prive" i was a diabetic.

just shows how sometimes your only another number.

That is terrible that he didn't know that you had diabetes, particularly as you are on insulin! 😱 Surely it must have been in your notes or evidenced by the...erm...insulin he was prescribing you!

So who has been issuing your prescriptions for insulin and test strips for the last 2 years?

I was wondering the same. Surely he must have a full list of your meds on his system, which would need somewhere to say 'type 1 diabetic'.

Is he suffering from confusion do you think ?

Crazy! There are times when you do have to inform your Doctor of your own conditions, but not knowing at all was crazy! And why did you have to prove it?! Hope your care improves now they know you have diabetes! 🙂

yep me too!! Surely he must be able to see records of insulin prescriptions??

confusion??? maybe he was having a hypo?!! hahaha

Maybe in Ireland they deal with the prescriptions differently and the hospital prescribe the diabetes drugs?

Though one would have thought a persons existing medical record would just go to the new GP, same as here. So if the old one had the original stuff from the consultant saying what was what, that would have been passed on .....

well - maybe he thought you just liked the taste!😱

Hi all, thanks for the replies. I have calmed down a bit now .LOL.
here i get a green book as its called with the list of diabetes medicines needed and its handed into the chemist in which i get it off. the hospital i attend does up the list and i give it into the chemist to get it updated with any changed which is then approved by the medical board. yes, long winded i know but as there is never much chnages it works well.

So this is my other doctor i attend, NON diabetic doctor as we'll say, and he has been prescribing me things which he possibly shouldnt have.

I am condisering bringing it up to the health board or am i over reacting. it would say something if i had only been in with him once or twice and it wasnt recorded but in the past 2 years i have been in 8 times.

just frustrating.

I don't think you would be overreacting in reporting it to the Health Board. I am, for example, allergic to penecillin and it's important that my doctor knows this so they don't prescribe me something that might make me very ill! The same has to be true of someone with Type 1 diabetes - even more so, I would have thought. What sort of records does he keep about his patients, if such fundamental facts are not present? If he has a problem remembering that you have diabetes after two years of reminders, then how many other patients are potentially at risk? Definitely something that needs to be investigated by the appropriate authorities, I would think 🙂

Technically the notes that are held on you are the property of that health service. For example, if I transfer and escort a patient from one hospital to another, the notes remain with the original hospital as they are the property of that trust. This is why your new GP hasn't any record of this. Your previous GP owns your notes. They are not transferred with you. I would however, expect a decent handover either written or verbal from one professional to another. Seems this hasn't occurred.

Hi Noelle,

I would bring it up, even if you don't want to complain necessarily...they still need to be told as he could have been putting your health at risk. And if you don't tell them there's a problem, they won't know to do anything to change and improve (can you tell i work in HR??!)

Plus from what I remember in your original post, he did know you were diabetic before, & therefore if he has his own separate notes, he should have updated them, and then he wouldn't have had to tell you he didn't know!!!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
