UK manufacturers have reassured pharmacists that they will not face similar medicines shortages to Greece, following media reports of manufacturers withholding supply after the country ran up ?1.7 billion in unpaid bills.

Greek pharmacies were running low on medicines after manufacturers, who also cited fears that the drugs would be sold abroad, withheld more than 200 products, the Guardian reported last week.

But the economic situation in Greece was "radically different" to the UK, said the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI).
