Forecasters are warning of a bank holiday sunburn risk as UV rays are expected to reach very high levels during the sunshine this weekend, after weeks of cooler weather.

The Met Office is anticipating UV levels of 8 in the south of England on Monday, which is considered “very high” for the UK and requires extra sun protection.

Though the temperature will not exceed the averages for the time of year, people could be caught out after weeks of unseasonably wet weather.

The Met Office spokesperson Oli Claydon said: “Most of May has been statistically pretty cool and wet but we’re seeing a bit of a change in fortunes already and that will remain through the week, through the weekend and into the beginning of next week as well.”

Temperatures will reach the low and mid-20s across the UK, including the north-west of Scotland, with the south of England expected to top 25C on Monday.

I, for one, will not be venturing anywhere near any places popular with the general public this weekend, I will watch the heaving crowds of Indian variant vectors on the telly news! 😱 🙂

My family are staying in a lodge in Bowness on Windermere (belongs to son-in-laws parents). Apparently the town is stuffed to the gills. As a result, we are cat sitting. I know we've got the better deal. I'd forgotten it was a Bank Holiday weekend to be honest. Every day is a holiday when you're retired. Actually, the only way I know it's the weekend is the newspapers get heavier.

Anyone who gets sunburned is an idiot. It just takes one episode of sunburn to trigger off a malignant melanoma, a particularly deadly form of cancer. The trick is slow tanning, which just makes you more likely to get Squamous Cell Carcinoma, which is non malignant and easily treated. Or you can just stay pale and interesting...

I've had that twice, first one was cut out and the second one was treated with the chemical burn cream 🙂 I always remember the Mike Harding sketch about holidaymakers returning from Spain in the 1970s 'Help me off with me back' 😱 'How many noses have you had?' 😱 :D

I had a melanoma in situ on my wrist, fortunately caught before it had spread.(I now have a scar and a bit of a dent there where they removed the skin and underlying fat). It was exactly where I burnt when I was skiing once, twenty five years previously, because my ski jacket sleeve didn’t quite meet the end of my gloves and I had a one inch gap.

Jeezo. We've had months of sitting in our houses watching rain and cloud from the windows. Suddenly we get a few days of sun and the miserable, doom mongers can't keep their mouths shut and let folk enjoy a bit of warmth without this cloying need to indulge in Nanny State-ism. 🙂
Honestly, skin cancer? For goodness sakes!!!!

I don't like crowded places at the best of times but I hope that those who do enjoy their break. As for Indian variant vectors, we've yet to see any credible evidence directly linking mass gatherings like this to outbreaks of covid despite a year of similar doom mongering about other variants and there's absolutely no basis to assume that there will be outbreaks this time either.

Enjoy your weekend folks!! 🙂

Hot and sunny in Dorset, I do wear suncream whenever the suns out as I take beta blockers which have the side effect of getting sunburnt quickly. Looks like I missed a patch today as I have a littlefinger sized patch of sunburn on my arm

The beaches here in Dorset were absolutely packed last summer and local people were worrying about the tourism bringing Covid spikes but our cases stayed low. I think being outdoors in the sun makes things safer.

I agree but just being outdoors on its own is safe enough.

I remember all the panicking last year about places like Bournemouth but I'm not sure there's any credible evidence anywhere that outdoor transmission of this virus is even a thing.

Interestingly it turned out that although it can exist on certain surfaces, that doesn't seem to be a source of transmission either but people are still manically cleaning everything, including their hands, like a possessed demon.

It looks like it's indoors where the problems occur and there's clearly some form of seasonality to it as well because cases rise and then eventually fall seemingly regardless of any intervention we introduce. Despite all the masks, the air we are breathing in shops is packed with all manner of airborne crap including small moisture droplets which can and do carry the virus, which we then breathe in again through the side of our masks.

Anyway, full vaccination of all adults will pretty much put an end to the hospitalisations and deaths as it has been doing for months now and those are the only two statistics which matter going forwards - the alternative being we stay at home cowering under the bed sheets for the rest of our days.

In the meantime, as I said above. I hope people enjoy getting out into the sun. Looks like a lovely few days coming. If I still lived near your area, I'd have been at the beach too. Bournemouth and Poole were great places to visit. Too far away now though.
