The UK government is making a fresh bid to overturn a decades-long US import ban on traditional Scottish haggis.

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson will raise the issue with senior officials from the Obama administration this week.

Scottish producers had asked Mr Paterson to take action when he visited the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh earlier this month.

Haggis imports have been outlawed in the US since 1971.

The ban was put in place because the country's food standards agency prohibits sheep lungs - one of the key ingredients of haggis - in food products.

Hoots mon! :D

They don't know what they're missing. :D

There is a program on the food channel called 'Dine-ins, diners and dives' where the presenter Guy Fieri goes to restaurants all over the states. He once went to one which was run by a Brit who made his own Haggis (without the lungs) and they mentioned that some people smuggled haggis in from Canada. Haggis varies so much that you probably wouldn't notice the lack of lungs. Having said that Grants tinned Haggis is primarily Lambs Lungs (listed as Lobes). Grants also make a vegetarian Haggis - don't know what that tastes like - you've got to draw the line somewhere.
